A special message sent by the Rebbe in 1962 about the opportunity presented during the holiday of Purim to reach out to fellow Jews was shared with COLlive.com.
The telegram was sent via the Western Union Telegraph Company on March 19, 1962 to two Jews living in Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands.
It was addressed to Mr. Fisher, an Israeli government representative working on encouraging Aliya to Israel, and to the recently deceased R’ Doniel Meijers, one of the first Lubavitch Chassidim living in the country.
In it, the Rebbe calls on them to “use out the remaining hours of Purim to increase in Mishloach Monos, in Matanos (La’evyonim) and all practical (Mitzvos) and influence others to do so as well.”
The Lubavitch Youth Organization in New York has launched today a campaign encouraging Crown Heights residents and Chassidim of the Rebbe to “set aside time for Mivtzoim.”
They quote the instructions the Rebbe gave on Purim 5741, which was a year of Hekhel, for men, women, and children to be engaged in activities of Jewish unity.
In specific, the Rebbe requested that every person take part in the Purim campaign to “simply reach every Jew” and help them practice the Mitzvos of Purim, as well as hold joyous Hakhel gatherings – especially for children.
People willing to participate can choose from hundreds of locations around New York, including senior centers, hospitals and more. Children are encouraged to come along and bring the joy of Purim to all.
