On August 18, eight judges will be in Crown Heights at the Jewish Children’s Museum for a panel on how to navigate City and State courts.
This is the first time a panel like this has come to the Crown Heights Jewish community.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet judges like Michael Gerstein, who ruled in the case of a French student visiting Crown Heights who climbed the Brooklyn Bridge, and Judge Devin Cohen, who ruled on a 770 case.
Also in attendance will be Loren Baily-Schiffman, the only Orthodox Jewish woman currently on the New York Supreme Court.
“It is important that our judges have a direct understanding of the Crown Heights community’s culture and unique needs. I am proud to offer the community the opportunity to meet the judges and ask questions in their own voice,” said State Senator Jesse Hamilton. “These judges make decision that impact the lives of our neighborhood, our neighbors, and ourselves.”
The event will moderated by Judge Genine Edwards of the Supreme Court.
Panelists include:
· Cheryl Gonzales, Housing Court Judge
· Craig S. Walker, Civil Court Judge
· Michael Gerstein, Acting Justice, Supreme Court
· Jacqueline D. Williams, Family Court Judge
· Devin Cohen, Acting Justice, Supreme Court
· Reginald A. Boddie, Acting Justice, Supreme Court
· Loren Baily-Schiffman, Acting Justice, Supreme Court
Senator Hamilton will also report to the community on his trip to Israel last week. The event is co-hosted by the 20th Senate District Jewish Advisory Committee.”
They should also talk about the importance of serving on a jury & not trying to wriggle out of it. Would you want to be judged by your peers – or by 12 random people who never interacted with a frum Jew? Every time a Yid comes to the court with some pathetic excuse why he/she should be excused it’s a Chillul Hashem.
Hopefully they’ll give tips on Yeshiva grads can do well in law school and receive proper opportunities.
They should be in ehrlich batei din? There’s no bigger plague than the false arrests used by divorce lawyers as one ups in custody battles. Navigate courts when needed and with a heter bais din for civil matters, but the gross and inappropriate use of family courts for custody and divorce, which has lifelong traumatic effects because of overzealous lawyers needs to stop.
Just come the event is open to crown heights.
It sounds amazing. I’m really looking forward to this event. Let’s all make a KIDDUSH Hashem firstly by showing up and also by being respectful etc.
Thanks to all the organizers CHJCC and all the others.
Is there any registration required to attend?
They certainly do – especially when it comes to Supreme Court & Family Court and civil divorce. There are way too many people in Crown Heights who have been through the ringer of this broken court system or are still stuck there. Everyone – men, women, and children suffer from the Judges’ lack of backbone and seeming lack of actual interest in providing justice. Should we take this opportunity to protest ? There are a lot of angry, hurting people here. Brooklyn has the absolute worst reputation of the 5 boroughs. Please do not comment on why everyone should be… Read more »
Hope people show. Any Food? These judges never work overtime. Hope we give them a good impression.
Wow. sounds like a great event and well needed in the community. Kudos to Yaccov Behrman and Jacob Eisdorfer.
