Dear non-Israeli bochurim, if you ever had a dream to board in 1414 during your single days in New York, now is your chance.
for the first time, the administration of the Central Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch at 770 Eastern Parkway has agreed to secure beds in the dormitory at 1414 President Street.
The building which has 310 beds was until now a hub for Hebrew speaking bochurim who come to Crown Heights to spend a year or two as part of the Kevutza group to be around the Rebbe.
A few months ago, in a rare setting, members of the 770 Yeshiva administration (“hanhalah”) have met with a group of American and non-Israeli bochurim after the latter complained that preference is being given to their counterparts from Israel.
Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Zalman Labkowski, Mashpia Rabbi Shlomo Zarchi and administrator Rabbi Moshe Meir Gluckowsky who were present at the meeting in Getzel’s Shul were said to be receptive to the concerns.
Now, with registration opening for the upcoming school year 5773, the hanhala is reaching out to “all potential non-Israeli students” to fill an application form and secure a bed before the Israelis do.
“The way it works is that the Yeshivos in Israel – there are 5 major ones – handle the registration process on their own for their students, and then submit the lists to us,” Rabbi Gluckowsky explained to COLlive.com.
“That puts the American and other non-Israeli bochurim at a disadvantage, because each one needs to register on their own and many times they wait until the end of the summer when the dormitory is already full,” he said.
“At the meeting, the bochurim said they felt there was a disproportionate amount of places given to Israelis as opposed to non-Israelis,” he said. “If registration will be done in a timely fashion, we can commit to splitting it 50/50.”
If 1414 ends up full with more bochurim requesting room and board, they will be set up in apartments/basements in the neighborhood – an option most bochurim dislike for not being in the Yeshiva setting.
Applications are reviewed on a “first come – first serve” basis, Rabbi Gluckowsky stated and called on bochurim to register right away “so we have a sufficient amount of time to set up our dormitory in an organized manner.”
Non-Israeli student wishing to be registered in 770 and 1414, should send an email requesting an application form and instructions to Rabbi Brod at cyttl770@yahoo.com and a copy to Rabbi Gluckowsky at cyttl770@gmail.com.
Is it true that they had to hang reminders not to shave during sefira? Many of the 1414 dwellers have trimmed beards
I have a beautiful newly renovated (complete gut job) 1 bedroom furnished basement available to rent. It has large windows, 2 exits. 2 sinks granite counter. full bathroom. The living area has doors and could be a 2nd bedroom for 1 person. $800 /mo + $100 for utilities. NO smokers. 347 416 1672
…for turning a dysfunctional, badly managed moisad into the orderly, well-managed Yeshiva it has become. After years and years of neglect, you have restorted the Rebbe’s Yeshiva to its former glody, and for that I am very grateful.
Please post a list of available apartments in CH for under $1000. There are MANY people, not just bochurim, who would love a list like that.
In my experience, you can’t even get an unfurnished, 1 bedroom apartment for $1000. Maybe you could rent a studio with a bathroom and no kitchen for $500 a month. Maybe. And then it would be a basement thats not up to code, with no windows, no fire exit, etc.

the article didnt say that americans were not allowed until now, rather that MORE americans will be allowed in now
people should read…
Is it my tax dollars or my tzedaka dollars paying the bills?
The dress code should be strictly enforced, as well as minimal attendance rules. If this is a dorm for ‘yeshiva bochurim’ then there should be Zero tolerance for those that do not comply!! Second infraction and your luggage should be packed and left on the doorstep.
The bochurim should set an example to our local youth and adults. How can we allow these characters and their “interpretation” of halacha to parade around as representing our “yeshiva bochurim?”
Brod gives priority 1 to Israeli guys who come spend a year NOT in 770 but working elsewhere & to good bochrim who daven & learn all day he gives very hard time for papers etc e.g. bochrim from france that come spend a year do only learning etc he takes i20 away from them in middle of year when they cant come back from home after pesach, that is a horrible thing to do & very discouraging for a bocher that put in time & effort in order to be able to come for a year in 770. its called a basement which is nicer cleaner and more spacious then 1414, you can even find some 3 or 4 bedroom basements for $1000. true you wont get meals, but most bochurim get food stamps and ill take a furnished apt without meals any day before living cramped in 1414 with “their meals”
Scores of US bachurim have been sleeping there for years, I was there for 2 years not long back.
where can you get a 2 bedrooms for $1000 in ch not even a basement this is not 1990
Dream on.
3 meals a day and where are u finding 2 bdr. for 1000?
Just from the pictures in this article you can see that 50% of the guys don’t belong in 1414.
Only last night I witnessed a whole group of 1414 residents who were officially having a “farbrengen” and they were standing outside 1414 to smoke and they were dressed like a bunch of bums with tight shirts, tee-shirts, no tzitzis and some were even with shorts!
Non of them ever show up to learn in 770, but they have beds in 1414.
Grab a CH basement , brand new 300 to 350.00 a mos .
private entrance ,
food you can eat all you want at 1414 (Yoskeh food…) or mermelsteins , or order at Empire grill or Mendys
Plz there are many Americans in1414. This is article is all about exciting everyone about the evil Israelis. It’s true that to many of the mostly foreign Bochurim feel that Kvutzah is their year to get to chill out, but let’s not forget that many Americans have that same attitude while on bochur shlichus. So you just got to look at who’s doing the right thing not just on the bad apples.
that’s 250 per year or per month?
4 bochurim per room
each bochur needs to pay $250 thats $1000 per room
you can get a 2 bedroom apt in CH furnished for $1000
plus in your own apt you can have internet and have all the guests that you wish for
i always wondered what goes on in these dorms, wish there was a hidden camera
I live in 1414, English speaking bochur. I can honestly tell you that half the israelis here dont belong here. They are not Bochurim but a bunch of Moderned-out bums who blast goyishe music in their rooms and public bathrooms. The rest of the time their downloading and watching movies or smoking.
Its all the guys with ugly skin-tight colored H&M shirts, and fit pants. They are a large contingency here. How did they get in???
Occupy 1414?
What are they gonna do about it?
Everybody knows it’s not Hanholo that controls 1414, and if the Israelies in charge don’t agree there will be no Americans.
the dorm was open for american bochurim since the doors opened a few years back
this is not new
I know plenty of American bochurim there.
the rent is minimal – around $250
You get a bed in a room of around 3-4 people, plus 3 meals a day
a person who slept there as a bochur
Where does all the rent go?
BS”D
Boruch Hashem!
Very happy to see this. Now it would be good to have a little bit of Achdus in the Yeshiva and have non meshichists and meshichists learning side by side. One Chabad, one world, one love.
