An exchange of letters between the Rebbe and a young child from Crown Heights is making its rounds on the web because of a single line.
The 11-year-old girl penned a hand-written letter to the Rebbe in 5742. Her letter was written in Hebrew, although she did add in English and in large letters “I Want Moshiach Now,” the slogan often recited at children’s rallies during that time.
She added in the end of her letter, a sincere blessing to the Rebbe. Embarrassed for the Rebbe’s secretariat to read it as well, she wrote it as a coded message, exchanging each letter she wanted to write with the next letter of the alef-beis.
“My blessing to the Rebbe that he will have children although it was not decreed for him,” she wrote.
What was even more surprising was the Rebbe’s response.
In it, the Rebbe refers to her nearing the age of Bat Mitzvah and blesses her with success in learning and growing up to be an example for others.
At the end of the letter, the Rebbe added “שהגד סכ דאקיד,” meaning, “Thanks for the blessing,” using the same code.
We’re told this girl is today a teacher in Pittsburgh.
This shows the Rebbe’s sensitivity to all, even a young child. And he had a great sense of humor too! May we be zocher to see the Rebbe neshama b’guf NOW!
PS: Why do even these nice stories get people to argue and call each other fools? Why can’t we finally all get along??? This hurts as much as the story heals…
i wish i saw him..
When YOU write it out you’ll have to use the next letter because SHE USED THE PREVIOUS LETTER. The article said she used the next letter which is wrong. I don’t know what’s so hard to understand.
BS”D to 39 there is no tuf in the Rebbes answer. Write his 3 words out and write out the next letter under each letter and it workks perfectly-toda al haBrocho
thanks!
duh the rebbe knew it!
אשרינו שיש לנו רבי כזה
For the same token there’s no next letter to a ת.
When she wrote it she used the previous letter not the next (E.G. א instead of ב).
It’s a basic substitution cipher – this one is the simplest of all (use the preceding letter) – I taught it to my kids when they were very young now we’re all cryptographers. It’s also not that the Rebbe broke the code that made the Rebbe great; it was the Rebbe and his relationship with all who entered into his life that made the Rebbe great.
He didn’t spend time reading the internet….
Honestly, the Rebbe cared about each Jew like a diamond – and often used the mashal – of who doesn’t have time to count and care for his precious diamonds.
Made me feel very proud to be a Chossid!
beautiful story
When you are WRITING using this code, you use the PREVIOUS letter.
When you are READING this code, you go FORWARD one letter.
its 17
my q. is where did the Rebbe have time to do all the thing that he did, with pations and with everyone felling that their the most important to the Rebbe
Really? You’re going to call someone a fool because they
figured out something differently?
Grow up and get yourself some manners
yes, even to children! When my daughter was 8 years old she sent in a check to the Rebbe from a young Israel woman that was friendly with our family. She explained to the Rebbe in a letter that she invited this lady to the Yud Alef Nissan Farbrengen and the woman came and enjoyed it. Two weeks later she received a letter in the mail from the Rebbe Thanking her for the news as well as a receipt for the check!
As the letters indicate, she turned 12 on Vov Tishrei.
BS”D to 26.I am afraid that you are the fool and even if wrong is that away to talk-the code uses the next letter. Why not write it out and try it. It only works with the next letter
When did she turn 12?
Fool. 19 was saying that the code uses the previous letter
מדמשט
מדמשט
BS”D to 19 I am afraid that you are wrong it is the next letter, there is no previous letter to an aleph, in last word
Its things like this that make me cry…
What do you mean by that?
I agree 100% with the comment of #10. The greatness of the Rebbe, wasn’t the fact that he figured out the code. That is a very common code and many use it. The real greatness of the Rebbe is, that he saw the sincerity of a 12 year old girl (despite that it might have been a foolish brocha) and responded to her in kind. Just imagine the excitement of this young girl when she received this answer and written in her code language. It must have made the greatest impression and excitement in her life. AND THAT WAS WHAT… Read more »
She exchanged each letter she wanted to write with the PREVIOUS letter of the Alef Beis not the next.
Made me smile!
i have a queshten:
i never saw the Rebbe unfortunately, how did the Rebbe have time in practicality for everyone and everything?
more over, bast on what i have hers, when the Rebbe took care of someone he never rushed the c”v?
it’s found on every mezuzah!
” i want to see the rebbe begashmeyes” NOW!!!!!!!!
thats where the source for encryption comes from, the goyim got it from us
How the rebbe ansuer for the girl!!!
We miss you a lot!!!
The Igrois of the Rebbe and Frierdiker Rebbe are replete with this code . Used when they communicated with Anash in the Soviet Union. Ma’amad= Nifneh and the like.
how we miss you!!
It is not surprising that the Rebbe could ‘figure out’ the code. What is astonishing is that a leader of the magnitude of the Rebbe, who is busy with the problems of the world, would take the time to bother with such a code, and to respond to the child with such dignity and respect. That is one beautiful illustration of the Rebbe’s greatness on a very personal and touching level.
let us wake up and understand who our rebbe is and lets go in the rebbes ways and spread the light of chassidus.
p.s you dont need to be a shliach to do the work of shlichus
written by aproud chossid and trying to be a devoted shliach
This code is brought in Pri Etz Chayim in the name of the ARiZaL in at least two places. Once in Shaar HaBrachos.
Any code, any time
to read!
Wow! The Rebbe’s attention, sensitivity, and rapport to this little girl is simply amazing!
I remember hearing years ago that a little girl came to up to the Rebbe for dollars holding a doll and the Rebbe placed a dollar on the doll too.
And how the rebbe took the time to reply to her Bracha using her code
it’s actually not very difficult to work out a code if it keeps to certain rules..
Indeed it is. But more amazing is the way the Rebbe communicates with every jew, even an 11 year old girl. Can you imagine how the girl felt when the Rebbe replied to her with that response???
its amazing how the rebbe realized the code too
