Rabbi Mordechai Hecht of Chabad of Forest Hills and Anshe Sholom Chabad JCC Kew Gardens has been lighting a menorah at the Queens Borough Hall for the past 6 years.
Borough President Helen Marshel made sure to always be attend – especially this year, her last in office.
She was joined by President-elect Melinda Katz, A Queens native who comes from a family with a long history of civic involvement. She was 80 percent of the vote and will be taking office January 1, 2014.
Rabbi Hecht thanked the outgoing president for her help to the community and spoke about the holiday and how it is important that the Jews of Queens grow and thrive with the help of the new president.
Also present for the lighting of the 6th candle on the tell menorah was Deputy Borough President Barry Grodenchik.
In attendance were also Rabbi Mendy Hecht of Chabad Forest Hills North, Rabbi Yossi Mendelsohn of Machne Chodosh Synagogue Forest Hills, President of Anshe Sholom Chabad Jerry Gaeta and his wife Robin and other locals.
Queens is blessed to have such royals!
