Close to 500 people packed the Markham Theatre on Tuesday June 28th for an unforgettable “Evening with the Stars”. The overflowing crowd was treated to a fantastic musical concert – celebrating the 25th anniversary of Chabad in Markham.
Rabbi Meir Gitlin, Youth Director at Chabad Markham who was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, reminded the crowd of how a short 25 years ago Rabbi Avrohom and Rebbetzin Goldie Plotkin arrived on the “shores” of Markham as emissaries of the Lubavitcher Rebbe to spread the wellsprings of Yiddishkeit and Chassidus, and have since built an exemplary community that is a model Chabad centre for the entire world.
He then introduced Howard Shore, councilor for Markham who brought greetings from the Mayor who recently returned with Howard from a trade mission to Israel.
Howard was followed by the Thornhill Jewish Male Choir, a group of dynamic singers mostly from Chabad of Markham, as well as representation from many other communities around Toronto. The Choir, ably led by choirmaster Gary Rewald, and assisted by Musical Director Klara Bagley, moved the crowd with a repertoire of old and new songs.
The Choir was then joined by Israeli child prodigy Micha Schachet, whose angelic voice touched the heart and soul of everyone present. A special presentation by Sholom Ber Plotkin and Danny Rosin gave the musical program its final touches. Special thanks to producer Gavin Opert for a flawless and seamless production.
Exquisite pieces of art from Chasidic artist Michoel Muchnik were presented to the awardees of the evening in five categories. The “Tzedaka Award” was presented to Eric and Lynette Inspektor, the “Chesed Award” to Raymond and Diane Katzeff, the “Musical Award” to Gary Rewald, the “Women and Wisdom Award” to Chips Klein and Heather Super and the “Aishet Chayil” Award to Allison Solomon.
A round trip ticket to Israel, donated by Charles Wachsberg, together with Limousine services by Shmuel Bitterman, was the grand door prize. The winner was Bruce Maisels. An elegant buffet was prepared for the VIP sponsors by Taam Tov catering and Richman’s Bakery.
It is hard to describe the uplifting feeling and amazing spirit that was felt by everyone throughout the entire evening. At the very end of the concert the crowd rose to their feet applauding the performers for an outstanding job. It was truly an evening to remember.
