What do you know? Sushi and Torah might just be a good match?
In an effort to raise a little excitement, Yagdil Torah announced that there will be sushi served at their weekly Monday night Beis Midrash in Crown Heights.
40 locals showed up, not necessarily heading to the sushi platters. The learning in the Kollel Menachem on Union Street at the corner of Kingston Avenue varied.
Director of Yagdil Torah Levi Browd has his own spin on the matter, discussing what bracha is made on a sushi roll.
“Some will say a Hamotzi is needed because of the rice,” he explained to COLlive after the hour-long study session. “But I would say that even if you want to be machmir – it is not an option.”
His theory goes something like this: People eating sushi are in it for the filling- be it raw fish or vegetables. The rice and layer of seaweed are secondary. Like when someone eats bread to dissolve alcohol, a Hamotzi does not have to be made.
Keeping it simple, participants said a Shehakol bracha on the sushi purchased by an anonymous donor.

The Rabbanom today have determined the bracha reshona on rice is mazonos and the bracha acronah is borai nafashos. This does not conflict with the Alter Rebbe because he said he did not know. To me the main food is the rice and nagiri. When it comes to taste these are the dominate flavors, so I say a mazonous on sushi. I might also have to say a shhakol on the nagiri. On second thought you should take a piece of each component and make a brocha on it.
keep up the great work,

inseder bircas hanehnin, the alter rebbe says that since the brocha to be made on rice is uncertain, the best thing to do is have it in a seuda (i.e. to wash first). i think.
why hamotzi if it’s it’s not bread it should be shehakoln or mezonos!!
