Popular Chassidic singer and entertainer Lipa Schmeltzer will include some Lubavitch nigunim in his long awaited Madison Square Garden performance this Sunday.
“The Event,” as the March 1 charity fundraiser concert is called, is expected to attract a crowd of thousands at the WaMu Theater in New York.
“We’ve had responses from all over the world,” said Sheya Mendlowitz, the producer behind the concert.
“We have people flying in from England. There’s going to be- I don’t know how large- a contingent that will be coming in from Israel — let’s hope. Because it was so publicized last year, people are looking forward to it.”
Mendlowitz was referring to “The Big Event,” a Schmeltzer concert last year that was canceled after some 33 rabbis issued an edict banning attendance.
Schmeltzer is expected to retain his shtick at the upcoming concert – as he did in his Crown Heights show in January. But this time with a little seriousness.
He will be singing the much talked about heart-tugging song “Moishe’le Neshama’le,” composed as a letter to the two-year-old child Moishy Holtzberg, surviving son of Chabad’s slain Shluchim in Mumbai.
A source told COLlive that Schmeltzer will also be performing quite a few Chabad melodies.
“They wrote some adaptations to the nigunim that were never heard before,” he said. “The whole show will be very fitting for Purim. But Lipa wanted these nigunim too in the concert.”
