67 students at the United Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Crown Heights held a joint birthday party today, with their friends singing and wishing them a successful year.
Only, today wasn’t really their birthday.
A brainchild of Rabbi Zalman Karp, teacher of grade 2, boys whose birthday falls out on non-school days (like in the months of Tishrei, Nissan and summer time) get to celebrate it with their classmates on a designated day.
The chosen day is the 25th of Adar, the birthday of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushkah Schneerson OBM, wife of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
Principal Rabbi Yosef Simpson notes that it was in connection with her birthday that the Rebbe initiated an international birthday campaign, urging people to celebrate their birthdays and utilize the day as a time of introspection and making resolutions involving an increase in good deeds.
“It’s already five years that we are doing this joint birthday party,” Simpson told COLlive. “We have this big cake, a story and sing so the classmates have a way to share.”
Rabbi Yossi Zweibel, teacher of grade 4 whose birthday is in the summer time, also got to sit at the head table with the 67 birthday boys.
Your hanochas Tfilin was already, you should be wearing a white shirt.
GO YOSSI AND LEIBEL ( and nunu??)
Toda Rabbah, Rabbi’s Karp Simpson And Goldstein, thank you for continuing to help us all be megadel our kinderlach with a chasidishe chinuch that is not matched in any of the other mosods, we have had kids in the other mosdos in town, the very best, yasher koyach, V’chazak.
i am wondering, if we could make a collection for a can of paint and paint the room or atleast the spots that are very dirty, so after pesach the kinderlach could eat lunch (?) in a clean environment. Talking about EATING lunch looks as if the kids are not realy into the bird food that they are given, “ain kemach ain torah”
Zalman, you always have the best ideas! Mendel still speaks about his awesome, fun, generous… cousin Zalman in NY. Love, the Swissies.
i on the other hand WAS looking and sadly found only one yichei yarmulkah just before the end. perhaps i missed something. whats all the noise about and what exactly are the above posters reading into. ad mosai. and o, happy birthday.
Yashat koach to Rabbi Karp on this amazing idea!
A rebbe from LA
for some weird reason i dont see not even one regular black yarmulkah on any of the boys! and if anyone wants to answer me back- i dont think that the yechi yarmulkahs give any more chinuch to the boys! face it- the regular black yarmulkahs are much nicer and way more classy. it looks much neater and finer and i really dont think that when a boy turns lets say about ten i think that he should \\look like a mentsh and wear a reg black velvet yarmulka since when is teh designs and pics on teh yarmulka supposed… Read more »
