Members of Avodah – The Jewish Service Corps had the opportunity to visit the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center recently.
Avodah is a year-long social justice fellowship where young professionals in their early 20s work at non-profit organizations and learn about social justice from a Jewish perspective.
Mollie Spevack, the Mediation Center’s Special Project’s Coordinator and a member of Avodah, invited her fellow Corps Members to Crown Heights to learn about the neighborhood and the services that the community-based organization provides.
Avodah fellows took self-guided tours of Crown Heights and discussed the complexities of the community. The group then had the opportunity to hear from Mediation Center staff and other community members about their backgrounds, and what career and life paths they have taken.
The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center is a storefront problem-solving center welcoming all community members through its doors. It assists walk-in clients with all types of issues, such as employment, housing and immigration assistance.
The Mediation Center also has its own programming, for both adults and young people. Recently, 19 community activists graduated the Leadership Training Institute after having developed their leadership skills, planned community-wide events, and learned about one another’s backgrounds and cultures.
The center also constantly seeks innovative ways to promote community cohesion and bring people together.
