Chabad Houses, Yeshivas, Schools and other nonprofit organizations in the NY, NJ and Massachusetts areas, take note. The Dept of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program’s deadline for applications is February 20th, 2009. In Massachusetts, the deadline is February 13th, 2009.
The Dept of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program provides funding for “target hardening activities” to nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of terrorist attack. Grants of up to $75,000 will be made to install security equipment such as alarms, access control devices, CCTV, lighting, upgraded doors and windows, fencing and barriers as well as for security training. Organizations that are approved for funding are required to provide 25% of the project cost from their own funds.
“As security is a growing concern amongst Jewish organizations in general and Chabad in particular, it is important to take advantage of this opportunity before the deadline expires,” says Mr. Yonason Lewis, of Global Security Planning, a security consulting firm based in Brooklyn, New York. “Although this program has existed for a number of years, there is no guarantee that it will be offered again.”
“The application process is detailed and requires careful attention to ensure that the program requirements are met and that all necessary information is provided in the manner required,” says Lewis. “This is a competitive allocation process with multiple organizations vying for a limited amount of funding so it is extremely important for the proposal to be prepared correctly.”
