Jewish residents in Brooklyn are puzzled over mixed messages being sent by Yvette Clarke, their representative in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Her vote on an anti Israel bill in November 2009 angered COLlive.com readers and resulted in her assuring Jewish officials of her “unwavering support for Israel.”
She later made a point to condemn an anti-Semitic Ukrainian politician and when the earthquake struck in Haiti, the Jewish community reached out to her to offer support.
But the Democratic Congresswoman surprised many last week when she signed a letter urging President Barack Obama to use diplomatic pressure Israel to resolve the blockade affecting Gaza.
50 members of Congress have signed the letter backed by J Street, a pro-peace lobby accused of working against Israel, and Rabbis for Human Rights, whose director Arik Ascherman was arrested for inciting Palestinians to oppose Israeli police.
Out of 29 congressmen representing New York, only 3 others signed with Clarke: Maurice Hinchey (D-Hurley), Paul Tonko (D-Amsterdam) and Eric Massa (D-Corning).
Clarke’s 11th Congressional District includes the neighborhoods of Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Flatbush, Park Slope, Prospect Heights and Kensington.
The letter read: “The current blockade has severely impeded the ability of aid agencies to do their work to relieve suffering, and we ask that you advocate for immediate improvements for Gaza…
“The people of Gaza, along with all the peoples of the region, must see that the United States is dedicated to addressing the legitimate security needs of the State of Israel and to ensuring that the legitimate needs of the Palestinian population are met.”
It states that “we also sympathize deeply with the people of southern Israel who have suffered from abhorrent rocket and mortar attacks.”
And that “we recognize that the Israeli government has imposed restrictions on Gaza out of a legitimate and keenly felt fear of continued terrorist action by Hamas and other militant groups.”
A Jewish activist told COLlive.com: “You would expect a little more compassion from (an) elected official. People might be suffering in Gaza, yet our people are suffering in Israel.
“She should know better before running to vote with leftist groups that have almost zero support in Brooklyn.”

You can vote for whatever policy you want but don’t expect to get my vote next time around – and I don’t care what kind of spin you or the CHJCC puts on this.
Where were these “Rabbis” for Human Rights when Israel was being bombarded by rockets?
The legitimate security needs of Israel is to get get rid of Hamas and Fatah and let Israel rule the area so it is not attacked by rockets. The legitimate needs of the Palestinian people would be better met if the corrupt Hamas was not in power and neither the equally corrupt Fatah. Israel should have taken control of the area in the Gaza War but it was afraid of the what the world would say instead the world is condemning Israel now.
OK, we know who you are now, because you are showing us. Did you sell out, did you NEVER have positive truthful intentions for us? You are showing us now.
and we are watching. How utterly disappointing to say the very least.

After being at her so called Health care town hall meeting I am not shocked she knows she can get away with this because the Jewish leadership will continue to take pictures with her and support her by election time its time we show that are votes aren’t automatic maybe we should start encouraging someone to run against her
