Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently announced that a grant of $633,333 will be given to Chabad of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Chabad of Vancouver also pledged to raise additional funds, that together reach $1.8 million, to expand activities among the Jewish community in the city.
Rabbi Yitzchok Wineberg of Chabad of Vancouver applied for the grant five months ago. Less than 48 hours after being notified, Wineberg coordinated a well-attended news conference at Chabad’s Oak Street location. Public officials joined community leaders and members to celebrate.
Benefits to the Chabad center include a modernized kitchen and dining room to accommodate social and educational events. A library, expanded storage area, office, and a health club will be added to the building as well.
The grant comes just in time for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games, to take place in Vancouver in Februray, when Chabad will assist the tens of thousands of tourists expected to visit the region.
