A ray of light for poverty stricken Jewish families in Crown Heights: 500 boxes of a variety of poultry were handed out this past week.
Mrs. Devora Scheiner‘s Yom Tov Fund held the Thursday distribution in front of her home on Montgomery Street.
Bagels, cream cheese and orange juice were waiting for the grateful recipients, some well-to-do before the financial meltdown.
“People said that if not for this they would not have food on their yomtov table,” Scheiner, who is involved in charity for over 36 years, told COLlive.
In principle, Scheiner says, she does not distribute hard cash.
“Money is sometimes use used foolishly. I also take some of the people to the grocery to help them shop right.”
Close to 200 families were assisted from this poultry give away, all funded by private donations.
“Some of them are single-parent families and others were laid off (of their jobs) because of health reasons and the bad economy.

If it were not for Mrs. Scheiner’s generosity we would have to go in to debt just to buy the bare necessities for Yom Tov. Me and my husband both work on the books (so we are not eligible for food stamps), but with a growing family (B”H), high rent, and high Yeshiva tuition it is just very hard. So from the bottom of our hearts we thank you, we can now go in to Yom Tov breathing a little easier!!
Many of these 200 famalies might be eligible for food stamps and they aren’t even aware of that. Even if you work and have a ateady income depending on the size of your famaly you may be able to get food stamps. So check out these hotline #’s:

Maybe Mrs Scheiner could give some shopping tips to the readers of COLlive. Think about it; a pot of barley soup could be made for the same price as a box of cookies. 4 dozen eggs is about the same cost as a box of junkie cereal. A working mom could stick a chicken and a bunch of carrots, onions and potatoes in a crock pot in the morning and have a yummy supper after work. It is cheaper than pizza with fries.
