Four people were killed and 91 were injured in an explosion early Friday morning in an apartment building in downtown Netanya. The circumstances surrounding the explosion are still unclear, but first estimates indicate that the damage was the result of a gas explosion.
Major damage was caused to the apartment building and to other nearby buildings on Herzl Street in Netanya’s Independence Square, an area frequented by many tourists.
The explosion rocked a 5-story building approximately 20 minutes after midnight. Windows were shattered, blinds were ripped out of place, and fences were split apart by the explosion. Glass, metal and pieces of wood were scattered in every direction.
Among those killed were three 16-year old girls and 28-year-old Mohammed Abu Ata from Wadi Ara.
Police investigating the case have found that the girls were apparently killed after picking up Sabbath candles from the local Chabad center, which they planned to hand out to city residents.
“My daughter went out with her friends yesterday to eat pizza. They were a group of five. I told her to be home by 11 pm, so she took a cab home. A half hour later the blast occurred – her friends were killed but she was saved,” said Serge Finkelstein.
“On Fridays and holidays the girls hand out Sabbath candles, and today they were supposed to hand them out too… My daughter is still in shock. She’s crying all the time.”
Rabbi Yaakov Mazuz, who runs the Netanya Chabad center, told Ynet the girls would attend French-language classes in the city center. “We’re really broken up about this,” he said.
Mazuz added that he had seen them at class on Thursday evening, and that they had later gone to eat and then hand out candles. “According to what I heard yesterday, after they went out to eat they started to hand out candles and then this horrible incident happened,” he said.
“These are young girls – holy souls, great souls. All of Netanya was at the funeral, they entire French community. Everyone knows the family, they are good and quiet people.”
Many of the people who were injured in the explosion were French tourists spending the summer in Netanya.
Two workers from the gas company which provided gas to the building were arrested on Friday morning for suspected negligence. Police are also questioning company workers who received calls before the blast about a strong smell of gas in the building.
The force of the blast also caused much damage to coffee houses hundreds of meters away from the epicenter of the explosion.
Emergency aid workers continue to evacuate residents of the apartment building with the help of cranes and are examining the building to ensure that no one is trapped in their apartments.
Large teams of aid workers are evacuating the injured to hospitals in Netanya, Hadera and Kfar Sava, and many police officers are milling about the area, shutting it off to traffic and asking the general public to keep their distance at this time.
Police received a complaint on Thursday afternoon about a man suspiciously loitering close to the building’s gas tanks. Police arrived and spoke to the man, but decided not to take him down to the station. After the explosion occurred, police arrested the man on suspicion of having tampered with the gas tanks.
After a number of the building’s residents complained of the harsh smell of gas in the area of the building, employees of the company that supplies the gas tanks were called to the scene. The workers reported that they found no problem with the building’s equipment, and they left the scene. A number of hours later, the explosion occurred.
The police are expected to interrogate the gas company employees today on suspicision of negligence.

after Mumbai, R. Heller gave a speech reconciling the apparent contradiction!
If they picked up the neshek to give out, they aren’t shluchei mitzva already? So how do you explain the idea of “shliach mitzva gelt” where people give money to others to give when they arrive at their destination the next day or even a week later? The idea is to insure they have a save trip, not just when they put the money in a pushka a week later they’ll be safe. Moreover, your explanation for why those boys were killed is at odds with the Gemara. If you look at the sugya in Pesachim 8b, it says that… Read more »

Everyone all over the world we saying exactly what you were saying, how could this happen? Shliach Mitzvah Anai Nezakin. In the articles it had been written that they were on their way to the Isreali bases on mivtzoim but the family pointed out that they were actually on the… Read more »

BH. a note of caution, if an extension wire is used to plug in an air conditioner, it should be at least as thick as the wire that is attached to the air conditioner.
