Two American families were killed when a plane crashed in Costa Rica on New Year’s Eve.
The small plane carrying 10 American tourists and two local crew members crashed and burst into flames in a wooded area in in Guanacaste, northwest Costa Rica, the government reported Sunday.
A Jewish couple, both doctors from Florida, and their daughter, were among the 10 Americans killed in the crash. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Mitchell Weiss and Leslie Levin Weiss had relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida, about 12 years ago. They died alongside their 19-year-old daughter Hannah Mae, when the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan went down, officials report.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, 16-year-old Ari Moses Weiss was also among the dead.
Strong winds were seen as a factor in the crash of a small plane in Costa Rica that killed all passengers on board and two local crew members, according to officials and witnesses.
Hannah Mae Weiss, 19, was active for many years in the Conservative movement. She was most recently a joint student at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, which is affiliated with the movement. Two years ago, she was appointed vice president for social action and Tikkun Olam at its youth movement, United Synagogue Youth, Haaretz reported.
“We in the Conservative movement are absolutely devastated,” Rabbi Steven Wernick, executive director of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, told Haaretz.
It was reported Sunday that another family of five Americans vacationing in Costa Rica were also among the victims.
They were identified as Americans Bruce, Irene, Matthew, William and Zachary Steinberg, of Scarsdale, NY.

Did the Rebbe really say not to fly single engine planes? I know that smaller planes have far more incidents than large planes do but I am curious in what context the Rebbe might have said that. Do you have a source or is this just something someone heard someone say… I would appreciate knowing. Thanks.

No Yid knows his spiritual level, some times a yid may consider his level higher than from others, without knowing that, that persons level is higher than his, some people have merits and actions that puts them at a level that we may never reach, keep that in mind.
So horrible. The picture of the other family was also posted. I saw that one first. Almost couldn’t believe when I saw this one. TWO Jewish families, on same plane, all perishing. 😢 So horrible. Please G-d, enough! Moshiach NOW!!!!!!!!!

As Yidden, it makes NO DIFFERENCE whether you’re Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform. Yes, we’re at different levels spiritually, but we’re all Hashem’s Neshamas.
