The Council of Chabad Chazonim will present their second annual Sefira concert on Sunday, June 6 at Beis Eliezer Yitzchak in Crown Heights.
The concert will feature local Lubavitcher Chazonim as well other talented Chazonim from other communities. With the goal of celebrating the community’s rich musical heritage and vocal talent, the performance is part of a series of well-received events staged in recent months.
“So many of these cantorial pieces are absolutely artistic gems,” said Dovid Babinet, Director of the Council of Chabad Chozonim. “It’s a shame that we don’t have a chance to hear them more often. That’s the gap we are trying to fill with all these incredible voices and musical talents. This is truly a kiddush Hashem being able to bring people together from all over to celebrate the richness of music in our faith and the talent that we are blessed with.”
The council presented their first concert ever, last year suring ‘Sefira’ to a packed house. Babinet has injected a new powerful force of performance emphasis and professional development. Babinet comes from an international career as a classical music vocal artist, having performed around the USA, in Europe and Israel and led the Chazonim on to present two acclaimed chazonus masterclasses with the West side institutional synagogue.
Talent appearing at the Sefira concert includes Shuey Samuels, Belgian Chazan Zevy Steiger, who is currently the cantor at the Chabad of the Hamptons, young dramatic tenor Chazan Aryeh Leib Hurwitz Chazzan at the Chai Center in Dix Hills, South African Chazan tenor Shmully Goldman, Moshe Adler, who was Chazan of the Sefardishe Shul in Boro Park for a number of years and Mendel Wolowik, originally from Montreal. The concert will be accompanied by pianist Yisroel Edelson, who was assistant to composer Leonard Bernstein.
Guest performers include Lazer Ostereicher, from Boro Park, Ed Smith from Queens, and coming in from Flatbush: Izzy Kupczyk, and Yussi Rose the very accomplished disciple of Moshe Stern.
Pieces slated for performance will be two versions of the sefira prayer “Ribono Shel Olom,” by Rosenblatt and Pinchik, “Ahava Rabba,” by Yehoshua Wieder, “Hineni Muchan,” by Moshe Stern, “Shomea Kol Bichyos,” by Kwartin, “T’vienu,” by Karniol, among many other favorites by Kossouvitzky, Roitman and Hershman.
