Australia’s biggest Jewish event of the year saw an estimated 20,000 flock to Caulfield Park in Melbourne for the 20th “Chanukah in the Park” celebration last Sunday.
Strong winds couldn’t shake the festive atmosphere and visitors enjoyed a range of attractions, including a Krav Maga IDF Martial Arts Display, camel and pony rides, and an animal farm.
Local restaurants such as Daneli’s and Shemesh Pizza provided a veritable feast, and many guests stopped by the Hatzola, Magen David Adom and the JNF stalls in the park to donate.
The highlight of the evening was a concert with renowned Cantor Dov Farkas, as well as the Niggun Collective band, who entertained the crowd.
Children from local schools were called up to stage to say the 12 Pesukim, and the Heichal Menachem Mechon Chaim Semicha Bochurim brought the story of Chanukah to life with a short play.
Event sponsor Rabbi Yosef Gutnick addressed the gathering, as did several Dignitaries. Member for Caulfield Mr. David Southwick, CR Mayor Jammie Hyams, Member Ports Kevin Ekendahl, Cr Margaret Esakoff, Cr Marry Delahunty and Cr Michael Lipshuts graciously attended and showed their much appreciated support.
Rabbi Yehuda Hoch of Chabad house of South Yarra was given the honor of lighting the Menorah.
The annual Chanukah celebration is organized by Shlomo Gurewicz.
