A small airplane with three people on board crashed in Westhampton Beach Sunday.
Two people were killed and one was seriously wounded, according to several local media outlets.
The FAA says the plane crashed into several trees as the pilot was practicing take-offs and landings at the Gabreski Airport in Suffolk County.
The victim who survived was airlifted to a hospital.
The three people aboard the plane have not been identified, but sources tell COLlive that two Jews were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash.
The FAA will lead the investigation.
Francis S. Gabreski Airport is a county-owned, joint civil-military airport located just north of the central business district of Westhampton Beach
Today’s planes are far more safe then older planes. They have many safety precautions in set in today’s planes to help prevent these tragedies from happening. As you can see by the stripes on the wing it is an American plane from WWII that flew over Normandy on D-day.
Clearly you don’t fly. For pilots, flying is their passion and they want to share it with others, be it students, instructors, you name it.
Your son didn’t take a test flight as then he’d be a pilot, he likely took a discovery flight (as millions do).
Many people are told many things…
Student pilots are allowed to take passengers along. Its a try-it-you’ll-like-it way to recruit more student pilots = more money for the school.
When my son took a test flight when he was on merkas shlichus he was told not to continue as the Rebbe was against any recreational flights on single engine planes.
It’s not safe.
Too many yidden have died for the thrill.
This must stop.
Is there a name for tehillim for the survivor?
If the pilot was practicing, it seems unusual that he had passengers, unless they simply wanted to go along for the ride?
FAA doesn’t lead such investigations. The NTSB does.
