$150,000 were raised at the annual gala dinner for the security of Chabad Houses in Thailand.
“This is a big miracle,” said one of the participants, noting that this sum was contributed in an era that is being compared to the Great Depression.
Additional security was required after the terror attack on the Chabad House in neighboring Mumbai, India, which took the life of the Chabad Shluchim couple and their guests.
“We are working together with the (Israeli) Defense ministry,” Rabbi Nechemia Wilhelm, Chabad’s Shliach for Israelis in Bangkok, said.
“The entire security expense will be $180,000 for our Chabad Houses in the country – Bangkok, Ko Samui, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Laos as well.”
These Chabad Houses, under the direction of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, host close to 120,000 tourists, backpackers and businessmen a year, offering them free meals on Shabbos and Jewish holidays, free phone and Internet services, and ongoing help in times of crises.
“We have felt a decline in our donations recently,” Wilhelm said. “Close to 50-60 percent of our donations has been stopped. The surprise is the young people who will donate what they can.”
