The city has agreed to pay a $100,000 settlement to a Brooklyn man whose beatdown by cops in a synagogue was captured on video, the Daily News has learned.
Ehud Halevy, 22, was sleeping in a back room of the Aliya Institute in Crown Heights on Oct. 8, 2012, when a security guard called police.
The disturbing video showed Officers Luis Vega and Yelena Bruzzese pounding Halevy with punches after he resisted arrest.
The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau investigated the incident and cleared the cops of wrongdoing, said Halevy’s lawyer, Norman Siegel.
you clearly did not watch the video
especially if i was unemployed. anytime. bring it on.
Will go to the Lawyers
As for the question as why pay when the cops were cleared, the real through here is the civil suit, and you can be found guilty in civil court even for an accident. I think he could have gotten more if he went to Trial, however he may not have gotten anything, and it’s a lot of work. Not bad.
Good luck Ehud
Who would submit themselves to such animal wildness for 100k? No one normal. And let’s hope the City doesn’t have the chutzpah to tax him on this money.
We live in a violent and materialistic society. Listening to a CBS radio commercial for a car, last week, the spokesperson said at the end of the auto’s description: “This is a car you’ll kill for!” A ‘Chabadnick said: “It’s just an expression.” I responded: “They’ve got your soul also.” How about saying: “It’s a wonderful car, fun car, ‘symphonic car’ amazing car, etc? It’s not just the children and criminals who bully, commit crime, it’s also the societal attitudes here. Why did CBS permit this? It suits them…probably never gave it a thought. The commercial fit perfectly in with… Read more »
The cost to bring a case to court can easily add up to 50-100k. Settling out of court without admitting any liability is the way to go in most legal situations and has nothing to do with wrong and right. 100k is pocket change, the only reason to give pause is that it does set a bad precedent but is the lesser of two evils typically.
The cops should pay not the city, they are getting away with beating this kid, just like they always get away when they do something wrong
wow!
There is some kind of unaccountability going on here – perpetrators cleared and even the money being paid is not coming from their pockets. Nothing to deter them from repeating the crime. There is something terribly wrong going on here. Why are the police only non-accountable when they hurt Jewish people r”l – who are the best citizens?
Does anyone know if he accepted the settlement. If not, this should definitely go to trial. 100K what a joke
if the victim had been of a different ethnicity they would have gotten a few million dollars at least!! most cops are not afraid of the Jews , we don’t carry guns! we don’t kill! We work hard! we are decent people ! the cops are afraid to start up with other people because they are likely to get killed! they give our neighborhood tickets etc. we won’t kill them. they stay away from other neighborhoods! only the Jewish ,good people get beaten, ticketed etc. get a life cops and leave us alone! go catch the REAL bad guys!
Ultimately its the tax payers who are footing this bill!
For those who complain about our tax money, and yes I pay taxes. We won’t pay less or more taxes just because he collects money. Police in the city are out of control they use there badge and think they can do whatever they want. Look I get we live in Brooklyn and they need to be tough. Their lives depend on it. Sometimes there are cops who like to be the bully, an clearly we have full view of how they use force and being a police officer against the innocent. Watch out for those!!!!! We also have to… Read more »
it is nothing ????????
How is that a lot of money? The attorney gets a good chunk. The man was beaten without just cause. We can not simply believe the officers that he attacked them, or whatever they said he did. Very often the accused misrepresent the truth to cover the possibility that they are found in the wrong. His getting a settlement doesn’t mean the officers were or weren’t guilty. It means they settled out of court regardless. They avoided a trial, etc. He settled for that amount. Period. Ity’s the rule of law. Move on.
Fact: The eye isn’t as well-trained in reading full paragraphs of CAPS LOCK as it is with lower-case. If you’re commenting, you probably want your voice out there. Keep it low. You’ll get more eyes. [just to those long caps-lock comment-ers:)]
A settlement is not necessarily an acknowledgment of guilt. All it means is that the city would rather pay $100k than be dragged through a long drawn out lawsuit, which would probably end up costing more than that, even if they win.
Simple arithmetic, and it happens every day in civil litigation.
The laweyer will probably get $33 – 40K of the money, so even if Ehud splits the $60,000 with himself and ALIYA for having the video running, it’s only $30K each. Not a lot at all. One year’s NY rent?
The cops did not know that they were being videoed so they claimed that Ehud had punched them and that he was being violent.
Only after they saw the video did they retract their story.
OF course it would be $1 million dollar settlement for waking up the “wrong” person of another ethnicity if it was this well documented in a direct well placed video.
the lawyers got a good chunk
SHOW ME THE MONEY $$$$$$$
I AGREE WITH #11 AND #2. WHY THE CITY IS PAYING AND NOT THE COPS THEMSELF? WHICH MEANS THAT WE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE PAYING THE TAXES, WE ARE THE ONE WHO IS PAYING, NOT THE CITY, AND NOT THE COPS. INSTEAD THE MONEY SHOULD COME OUT OF THE COPS POCKETS AND NOT FROM OUR POCKETS! WHAT KIND LESSON WILL THOSE COPS LEARN IF NOTHING COMES OUT OF THEIR POCKETS? THEY WILL JUST CONTINUE WITH THEIR WAY MORE OVER.
BH
I suggest that the original Video of thr incident be published, this way the comments/converdstion could be some what intellectual
Dont take the settlement you can make a heck of a lot more if it goes to trial 100,000 is getting off easy for them make them pay more so they should learn theyr leason
HAD THE VICTIM BEEN OF A DIFFERENT ETHNICITY THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN AT LEAST ONE MORE ZERO DIGIT TO THE SETTLEMENT AMOUNT. FOR THOSE WONDERING AS TO WHY THE POLICE WERE CLEARED OF ANY WRONGDOING YET THE CITY PAID MONEY, THIS IS TYPICAL OF SETTLEMENTS WHEREAS THE ACCUSED DOES NOT ADMIT ANY WRONGDOING YET A SUM IS PAID TO THE VICTIM. THIS IS REMINISCENT OF THE CASE OF THE CROWN HEIGHTS COMMUNITY VERSUS NEW YORK CITY IN THE CASE OF THE CROWN HEIGHTS RIOTS OF 1991. THE SITTING COUNCIL THAT BEGAN THE CASE AGAINST THE CITY, AND WHICH HAD INVESTED… Read more »
Do we forget so fast? Do we remember our reaction when we saw that video? We were all so angry at the injustice!
Bh he is going tho get something. Let’s remember!
$100k? it should be $1m. He should appeal.
he got the $ and the cops were cleared from any worng doing,
its a settlement not a judgment, what dont you understand
if the cops who punched don’t suffer, what has been gained here? taxpayers pay the victim?
He should get a lot more!
Yes you are missing something. Cops are TRAINED to deal with situations and use force with tactic manners. not just beating the guy up! there are trained ways how to do things
good!! he deserves every penny of it, if not more!!!those pigs need to learn a lesson, you dont go around beating up ppl just because u have a badge
Glad to see some fair compensation meted out in return for the punches meted out by the NYPD.
How could the (criminal) cops be cleared of wrongdoing yet the city still feels it’s better to settle and give Ehud $100,000, isn’t that contradictory?
If the cops weren’t in the wrong, why are they paying him?
Or where they??!
Am I missing something?
Cops are TRAINED to use excessive forced if they are attacked/threatened first, or even if they suspect that they are.
So why shoot the messenger?
Why is the city paying out 100k if they investigated and cleard the cops????
May it all be for the benefit of ALIYA….
The only way to prevent these atrocities is for them to know that there will be at least some kind of payback.
Lucky kid
This is my tax money going to this guy. Legal system in the US is ridiculous.
Then why is the city paying for a settlement if the police did nothing wrong?
Now that’s a lot of cash!
