Some of New York City’s major businesses will be presenting job openings and applications for the positions at the Brooklyn Job Fair 2015 to be held this week on Wednesday, May 13th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
The networking event is being co-hosted by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and is part of a sustained effort by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams to advance hiring of local residents through the borough.
According to statistics by the New York State Department of Labor, Brooklyn’s unemployment rate in March 2015 was 6.7%, a higher number than that of the city and the state.
“A Brooklynite with a job is a Brooklynite with boundless potential, and during my administration Brooklyn Borough Hall will always be a place committed to opening the doors to those opportunities,” Adams said.
Carlo Scissura, president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, said that “A strong economy means a strong Brooklyn, and we can accomplish both by getting our talented Brooklynites working.”
Participating businesses and organizations include All Car Rent A Car, Applebee’s, Brooklyn Nets, Brooklyn Spectator, Consolidated Edison Company, Duane Reade, FC Modular, Forest City Ratner Companies, The Home Depot, Home Reporter and Sunset News, Maimonides Medical Center, Midwood Ambulance Service, Modell’s Sporting Goods, NYC Bike Share, New York City Police Department, New York Life Insurance Company, New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, New York State Department of Labor, Red Hook on the Road, Santander Bank, Sheraton Brooklyn, Target, TDBank, TerraCRG, Urban Pads, and U.S. Army Battalion, NYC.
The fair is free and open to all. Participants were recommended to bring copies of their resume and to have it available to e-mail.
Recommendations to potential applicants include dressing for success, researching the companies in advance, preparing to answer questions about oneself, actively listening, showing enthusiasm, and following up all meetings with e-mails.
“Whether it’s on our construction jobs or at our operating properties like Barclays Center where 80% of our employees are from Brooklyn, Forest City Ratner has always worked to ensure that local hiring is a priority,” said Ashley Cotton, Senior Vice President of External Affairs for Forest City Ratner Companies.
Dawn Lapshan, district human resources manager for The Home Depot, said the Spring is its busiest selling season, as well as peak hiring season. “It’s a great opportunity to find new associates who are passionate about home improvement and customer service.”
