For nearly a decade, Zalmi Katz has been working in the world of men’s formal wear, honing an acute understanding of what discerning customers seek – quality, style, and a memorable shopping experience.
Recognizing a gap in the market, Zalmi set out to redefine the shopping landscape in Brooklyn, offering a distinctive blend of elegance, variety, and personalized service.
Zalmi, a fashion enthusiast with a keen eye for style and quality is originally from South Africa. He now resides in Crown Heights with his family. Zalmi entered the fashion industry around 10 years ago, initially operating a store in Long Island, honing his craft and gaining valuable experience in the business. However, it wasn’t until he observed the expanding fashion scene in Brooklyn that he recognized an opportunity to bring something new to the community.
Feeling that the existing stores in Brooklyn lacked a modern, curated approach to men’s fashion, Zalmi set out to establish “Gents” in Flatbush, 20 minutes from Crown Heights. His vision for the store was clear: to offer carefully curated products and personalized customer service, where every visitor feels valued and attended to.
Unlike the impersonal, self-service model common in many retail spaces, Zalmi wanted “Gents” to be a place where customers could enjoy a tailored shopping experience and leave feeling confident in their style choices.
In a recent conversation with COLlive, Zalmi shared his vision. “There was a gap in the market for a clean, Lakewood-style shopping experience in Brooklyn. Nobody’s doing it, nobody’s offering a beautiful, clean, spacious shopping experience, well-stocked, and obviously offering good service.”
At the Gents Shop, the emphasis lies on catering to every aspect of the modern man’s wardrobe. From impeccably tailored suits to stylish casual wear, the store boasts a comprehensive selection that appeals to a diverse clientele. Their inventory predominantly features boys’ and men’s formal wear, including suits, shirts, ties, belts, and trousers. The store offers suit separates in a myriad of solid colors, as well as performance-enhanced garments such as stretch pants and blazers.
One of the defining characteristics of the Gents Shop is its affordability without compromising on quality. Zalmi explains, “We’re a fair-priced store, we’re not over-charging, we’re not price-gouging. Our average men’s suit sells for between $250 and $350.” Additionally, the store caters to boys’ suiting needs, with prices ranging from $120 to $220.
Beyond the extensive product range, the Gents Shop prides itself on providing unparalleled customer service. With on-site tailoring services, customers can expect a customized fit that enhances their sartorial elegance. The store is set to introduce a curated selection of shoes, further elevating the shopping experience for patrons.
Zalmi summarizes, “We carry double-breasted, single-breasted, peak lapel, regular lapel. We carry a whole mix of a variety of options.”
Gents is located in Flatbush, 1999 Coney Island Avenue, and can be reached by phone at 718-750-9009. The website is www.thegentsshop.com
