Former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, who represented Connecticut for decades and was the Democratic party’s nominee for vice president in 2000, was laid to rest Friday in his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut.
He died Wednesday in New York City at the age of 82.
Political dignitaries, family and friends remembered the former U.S. senator at the funeral held Friday morning at the Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford. A second memorial service will be held at a later date, according to his family.
Former Vice President Al Gore, who tapped Lieberman as his 2000 presidential running mate, along with top Connecticut Democrats, former Sen. Chris Dodd, Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy and Gov. Ned Lamont, Lieberman’s one-time rival for the Senate seat, delivered reflections.
“Those who seek its definition will not find it in dictionaries so much as they find it in the way Joe Lieberman lived his life: friendship over anger, reconciliation as a form of grace,” Gore said. “We can learn from Joe Lieberman’s life some critical lessons about how we might heal the rancor in our nation today.”
Hani Lowenstine, Rabbi Ethan Tucker, Rebecca Lieberman and Matthew Lieberman eulogized their dad.
His daughter Hani Lowenstine spoke of her father’s energy and accomplishments alongside his deep humility.
“You were Yosef Hatzadik…and you were a Chosid. You had Emunah Peshuta, simple faith in Torah and Mitzvos,” Lowenstine said. “You accomplished a tremendous amount on an international scale for the greater good of the world. You were Mekadesh Shem Shamayaim on an unparalleled level… You were literally a walking Kiddush Hashem.
“You followed in the way of the Lubavitcher Rebbe constantly, on a mission in the world – to do Tikkun Olam – to fix this world. You were on a Shlichus, on a mission. We will continue this Shlichus,” she said.
Mrs, Lowenstine’s words are so beautiful and inspiring

Tears.
Besides his extraordinary character and rare, unvarnished and indefatiguable commitment to the defense of the Jewish people, one trait that struck me about this wonderful man was his utter humility. You could see it from his family, and from his circle of friends, by which I don’t necessarily refer to the politicians. He was truly a humble man who devoted his life utterly, to things that are the most meaningful, and to his family. We can all only hope to aspire to be such people.
I very rarely cry at funerals except for my closest family. But listening to Senator Lieberman’s daughter did bring tears to my eyes. Her love for her extraordinary father was so pure, her Judaism also so unapologetic and incredibly sweet. It was very much like him. It truly is something special to be the kind of Jew he was. He brought credit not only to our people but to our faith, in a way that commanded respect. A great man who lives on with his wonderful family.
And what an amazing daughter he raised!!!!!
Senator Lieberman’s daughter, Mrs Lowenstine can be heard half way through the clip….
Very moving and inspiring how she was raised with much Emunah and Ahavas HaBrios, a true Kiddush Hashem!

Joseph Isidore ben Chanan a”h was quite a mench And a fine person. He was a walking Kiddish Hashem and was a beautiful example for young Jewish people to emulate. He proved that America need not be antithetical to Jewish observance and success. At our 80th anniversary of the Beth Israel Chabad of Westport/Norwalk – Joe was our guest as Attorney General of CT. We encouraged Hadasa and Joe to sit down and eat As the food is KOSHER – as most other public events he attended, were not. The politicians attending – Gore, Malloy, Blumenthal, Murphy, Dodd, and other… Read more »
