A widely used artificial sweetener, which is found in various products including diet sodas, chewing gum, and certain beverages, is expected to receive a potential carcinogen classification next month from a prominent global health organization.
Among the products that Aspartame are used in: Coca-Cola diet sodas, Mars’ Extra chewing gum and some Snapple drinks, according to the Reuters news agency.
Two sources familiar with the matter reveal that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer research division of the World Health Organization (WHO), will categorize aspartame as “potentially carcinogenic to humans” in its upcoming announcement in July.
This decision, based on a comprehensive evaluation of available evidence, will not consider safe consumption levels for individuals.
Separate guidance on safe intake is provided by the WHO’s expert committee on food additives, known as JECFA (the Joint WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization’s Expert Committee on Food Additives), along with assessments from national regulatory bodies.
While the IARC’s purpose is to determine potential hazards, previous similar classifications by the organization have caused consumer concerns, legal actions, and prompted manufacturers to reformulate their products or switch to alternatives. Critics argue that the IARC’s assessments can be perplexing to the general public.
In parallel to the IARC’s evaluation, JECFA is also conducting a review of aspartame usage this year. Their meeting commenced in late June, and their findings will be announced on the same day as the IARC’s decision, which is July 14.

As if that’s the only unhealthy ingredient in there…
Nice to see people are finally waking up!
They’re finally realizing that the WHO and other such transnational bodies are rotten to the core, and that very little of what they say should be trusted.
Any person should know any of these ingredients are very bad and can cause illnesses.
I heard as a kid that aspartame is cancerous
For COL
At least its healthier than reg Coke. I have been drinking this for years and no cancer so clearly it does not cause cancer.
But better to keep ourselves healthy.
as says in Torah, “VENISHMARTEM MEOD L’NAFSHCHEM!”
I’m sure that was a joke. But no, it is not healthier than regular coke. Too much sugar is a huge problem, but a small amount is not poisonous like this chemical.
since cancer can only strike within 5 years…
Don’t test your fate. No cancer now but don’t know the effects of it that will only come out of it later.
Sugar is only bad for people with diabetes. Artificial sugars are harder to digest and can affect the digestive system so most people are better off with plant based sugars such as cane sugar or honey. The biggest problem is that in large amounts it adds calories. The bigger problem is that almost all recipes in frum cookbooks and magazines include unnessessary sweetening in salads, salad dressings, seasonings for meat, chicken, vegetables, etc. when herbs and spices would do. Leave yhe sweet fordessert!
Curious: Will there be news story now about the health risks that sugar and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) pose?
There have been warnings for many years.
Does Coke Zero have the same aspartame?
Coke Zero is same thing as Diet Coke fyi
But good to see COL publishing it, it’s about time the frum community becomes more aware about what we put in our bodies.
One should research what are the agendas of these organizations and their bias.
Recently I read a book from a well known physician who recommended exclusively a plant based diet, and later I found out that he was in the board of PITA, an animal welfare organization
Soft drinks have been in the blacklist of some green loonies for quite sometime
My guess is that most people that consume diet drinks in excess also consume other unrelated unhealthy foods and probably do not live a most healthy lifestyle.
How can one isolate a single ingredient and call it a possible carcinogenic when many other factors may be involved as well?
I hope the actual data and evidence will be published.
I for myself will not be a sheep and make any changes until I can see what they are basing this on.
they say everything can cause cancer
they just like to add drama
I literally have doubled amount of energy focus stamina etc. etc.
I found intermittent fasting and ketogenic diet exceptionally helpful.
Do the research yourself on YouTube. Yes it’s that easy. Just a little focus and time check out Dr. Ken Berry. Thank me later.
What also appears to have somehow been hidden from the communities across the U.S. is the lethal ingredient “hydrogenated” and “partially hydrogenated.” For well over a decade, no American bakery or company would dare put this in their ingredients. Yet, it is in the ingredients of most Jewish bakeries and Jewish companies. Check your ingredients! And demand that bakeries show their ingredients!
…the even more lethal ingredient dihydrogen monoxide. Why, people have died from just breathing it in, and entire cities have been destroyed by it!
(Psst… it’s water.)
