It’s Sunday afternoon and Yossi and Dina join us for a candid discussion about their experience at the Shidduch House. It’s not their first time coming, we have met before, but this time they arrive as a married couple BH. Each of them has participated in a Shidduch House event which eventually led to them being introduced, and the rest is their story to tell. They kindly agreed to spend some time reflecting on their personal perceptions and words of gratitude to the Shidduch House.
SH: How did you hear about the Shidduch House?
Yossi: My older brother had attended one of the Shidduch House events and so the concept was already familiar. When a friend sent me the invitation for an upcoming Meet the Shadchan event, I felt comfortable signing up.
Dina:My mother saw the Meet the Shadchan event advertised online and asked me if I wanted to attend. At first I was hesitant as I hadn’t been in Shidduchim all that long and wasn’t sure what to expect. My mother encouraged me to go and I was convinced to give it a try.
SH: What was the Meet the Shadchan event experience like?
Yossi: The event was very pleasant. The Shadchanim all had a different style but they all asked very good questions. They were very good at absorbing the information I shared with them. I felt like they got me and understood what I was looking for. Everything was so positive. The Shadchanim were all so nice and put me at ease. I felt very comfortable. I didn’t know if this would lead to anything, but I was hopeful that it might.
Dina:It was pouring really hard that night. I remember walking in and wondering how this would really help me. It was all new to me. It was a very pleasant experience. The Shadchanim asked questions and it felt good to know I had taken the first step in my journey towards marriage. It was also a good feeling for my parents to hear that I had met so many shadchanim which led to good informative discussions. The Shadchanim were real people who genuinely cared, and it felt very positive getting out there and on the map. The Shadchanim seemed professional and warm and really took the time to get to know me. But, never did I dream that my husband would come from this.
SH: How long did it take for a Shadchan to reach out with a suggestion?
Yossi: 6 minutes. As soon as I had met the first group of ladies, one of the Shadchanim immediately said she had a suggestion for me. She had such clarity and felt very confident that it was a good idea. And indeed, it was “the suggestion”.
Dina: 2 days later a shadchan reached out with an initial suggestion that I didn’t pursue. But then 3 weeks later ( after Yossi had attended the boy’s event) a shadchan enthusiastically reached out with this suggestion.
SH: What is your message to the public?
Yossi: Absolutely give it a shot, it can’t hurt. When you send your resume to a shadchan, they don’t necessarily get your personality even if you describe yourself accurately. When you meet in person, a shadchan can get a feel for who you are. The Shidduch House gives you the opportunity to meet many shadchanim, which is a major advantage over just sending your resume. If you don’t feel comfortable meeting many shadchanim at once, they also offer private one on one appointments as well.
Dina: If someone wants to set you up, make sure they know who you are, not just your parents. If they speak to you directly or better yet meet with you in person, it gives the single her own voice over the resume that perhaps her parents wrote for her. Even if you wrote it yourself, it gives you a much better chance. The Shidduch House gives you a chance to meet different people. If you’re open to it, it can be a very good way to get out there. The Shidduch House allows you to network and share your information and helps singles in the community. The Shidduch House has a lot of potential for growth.
