A new Crown Heights Community Garden will be opening in time for this summer, and will provide local children the opportunity to learn many new skills and enjoy many activities.
The garden, created by local resident Daniel Yeroshalmi, will be located a one-minute walk from 770 and will be the ultimate educational experience for children.
Yeroshalmi relates that he spent many years trying to grow plants in his front yard on Eastern Parkway but due to the low-quality soil was unsuccessful.
“No amount of chemicals could fix the terrible soil,” he said. “So last year I made the bold move to remove all the soil that was there. It was almost 1,000 cubic feet of the densest dirt I’ve ever held, one bucket weighing upwards of about 80 pounds.
“Working with nothing but a hand shovel, day in and day out, using any free time I had, I worked and continued to dig,” he explains. “Because I dreamed of growing a beautiful garden.”
With the help of his friend Mordechai, over the course of 10 months, he finally completed the project. They have invested thousands of dollars to complete the garden which is now filled with high-grade soil and has grown into a beautiful garden – “the biggest and nicest kosher garden in Crown Heights,” they say proudly.
Daniel decided to make this into a community garden, to benefit the children of our community, and educate them on the wonders of Hashem.
The Crown Heights community garden will be completely free of charge. Organizers are seeking to raise funds for this important community initiative.
“Please donate with all of your heart so this can truly happen, this summer right here in Crown Heights,” Yeroshalmi says.
The following are just some of the things planned for this summer.
Construction of garden beds
Seed selection
Soil production
Hydroponic gardening
Vertical gardening
Drip irrigation education
Compost tumbling
Greenhouse gardening
Wood chipping
Grow light education
Tool selection
Propagation and root development
Fruit dehydration
Bulb planting
And so much more!
Children will be able to bring home their own grown produce, and their own grown shabbos flowers, as well as a head full of knowledge on gardening.

To many more healthy educational outlets for our children
Great job Danny! Good luck my g!
Where is it located?
where this located
Right off of Eastern Parkway and kingston. A few doors down from the museum.
So necessary for the community. Thank you!
and huge thanks for providing this exciting learning experience for our kids
Nice idea. Hope the soil is tested periodically for heavy metals from the nearby traffic.
If you want another free local outlet for our children to pass the time in a safe way during the long hot days in the summer then please consider making a small donation.Thank you
That area has high tree coverage, I hope you have enough sunlight to grow things. Not only good soil but ample direct sunlight is critical. Good luck!
Cant wait to bring my kids over!
Thank you Danny for this incredible initiative to benefit our children! Thank u for dedicating ur time to this project!

As a long term gardener from west coast who grew successful trials in ch sorry but you didn’t have to dig out the yard. A successful garden can and should be as cheap as possible. You can successfully grow in raised beds, raised wicking beds, or in buckets (with air pruning and rain gutters under it, for example, using plastic bags for root veggies another example) using same methology as in the ground. Most veggies and flowers with exception of tomatoes and some root crops can grow in 3 and 5 gallon buckets that are often free.. You can also… Read more »
I’m thinking there’s not a lot of sun exposure in that area perhaps that’s why the soil was so dense, barely gets sun. summer vegs need 6-8hr direct sun to grow well.
We can’t use raise beds because we have our succa here every single year. And if I was going to do that method. I would’ve done a no till top layer. But this wasn’t soil. It was all debris from construction over the course of the past 40 years. If you don’t know the situation please don’t try to fix it.
And we also have many many chickens. And have a giant pile of compost. So thank you. But the fundraiser is for the supplies. I already paid for the thousands of dollars in soil myself.
And yes. We already have a drop irrigation installed and we’ll install more with the children as an activity and to educate them. Hopefully we can real our goal and buy all the supplies we need. So thank you for your help.
