Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin on Wednesday afternoon congratulated Gov. Kathy Hochul on her election win, conceding defeat in the New York’s race for governor.
Hochul, who earned around 53% of the vote, declared victory late on Tuesday. She officially won the race early Wednesday, becoming the first woman elected as governor in New York.
“Those controlling Albany should take note. New Yorkers of all walks of life are sick of the attacks on their wallets, their safety, their freedoms and the quality of their kids’ education and are hitting their breaking point, as proven by these results,” he said. “As they take office in January, Governor Kathy Hochul and those controlling Albany must address the grave concerns voiced by the voters. While this campaign has come to a close, the rescue mission to Save Our State continues.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Zeldin had refused to concede defeat. He said he was waiting for additional voting results to come in.
“We hope that as these results come in that we’ll be able to prevail,” he said.
Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans in New York and state residents haven’t elected a Republican as governor since former Gov. George Pataki. But Zeldin surged in the polls in the weeks before the election, closing in on Hochul’s lead and making it a competitive race.
Congratulations @KathyHochul on her election to a full term.
This once in a generation campaign was a very close margin in the bluest of states.
If not for the dedicated, hard work of grassroots volunteers & supporters this incredibly close race wouldn’t have been possible. pic.twitter.com/7latYSaka7

I wonder if this would of turned out better, had the Satmar Aronies not backed Hochul.
A sad day when a Jew cares more about What is Good for ME! Over what is Good for US!
Dude, he lost by a couple hundred thousand votes, aint no Aronim making that difference.
Can it be that the majority of New Yorkers voted for this? Law abiding citizens and people who earn their own living and pay taxes have been suffering here. Can they want more of this- and more of this means a steady decline?
For fighting the good fight and giving us hope that good people and good times can come.
We will need to learn how to defend ourselves because hochul won’t do it for you
Hochul for Hakhel
The is simple – we are simply outnumbered.
Only 1 in 7 people in the city are Republican.
For every 2 democrats in the state there are only 1 Republican.
If with this level of crime and decay we couldn’t muster enough for change we wont for a long time to come. Pataki was 20 years ago.
NY has become a one part state.
It’s the reality we have to learn to live with.
I don’t know about that. So many suspicious incidents at ballots are being reported on the news. Only in a few states like Florida did they have clear checks and balances on the election process and ballots. In some states like Arizona where the race is very close they are saying that results may only be in at the end of December. Hopefully that will not be allowed to pass.
He came within 5 points of the democrat and no one has come within 20 points in over two decades. Apparently this is what the majority of New Yorkers want to live with.
