Since the Rebbe’s brocha to Dr. Bunim Weinbaum of London in 1971 to “blaze the trails of Yiddishkeit with Alef Beis,” he has taught hundreds of adults to read Hebrew using the text of Movo Lekriah and later Lamdeni, which he was instrumental in getting printed 10 years later.
For over 40 years, Dr. Weinbaum’s calm and patient manner has given people who have never been able to learn to read Hebrew the chance to succeed. His claim that it takes 6 weeks to teach someone to read has been borne out literally hundreds of times.
“The speed depends on how much practice the student puts in; and, as in everything, practice makes perfect,” Dr. Weinbaum explains.
The Rebbeim of Chabad say that people who learn to read using “Kamets Alef oh” method will be strengthened in Emunah, and Dr. Weinbaum has seen how this is often the first step in a journey in Yiddishkeit.

Dr. Weinbaum notes that this is not a Hebrew speaking course: it is a course that will lead to greater comfort with the words of prayer and Torah. It can be used as a springboard to finding your way around the Siddur.
Dr. Weinbaum’s love of teaching has endeared him to men, women, and children and his patience has helped him to teach adults with mild learning disabilities. He has succeeded where others have failed.
Because of the pandemic and the universal use of Zoom, Dr. Weinbaum is now able to extend his passion for Hebrew reading worldwide and so fulfill his shlichus for the Rebbe in a much greater way.
