Kspace Miami:
The Black Tie Shabbat Affair is a weekend event held yearly in Miami in the middle of February, at which hundreds of young Jews from Miami, the United States, and the entire world attend.
It is a gala weekend, starting from a luxurious Shabbat where the requirements are to be single (not dating), be ready to meet your potential soul mates, dress formally (tie the men and formal dresses the girls), be between 19 to 40 maximum and be predisposed to participate in all icebreaker activities.
The annual highly anticipated gala event, produced by Rabbi Yossi and Keda Smierc of Kspace Miami, has seen steady growth. In 2016, 250 young people participated; 2017 – 300, 2018 – 320, 2019 – 350 and 2020 – 420.
Every year it is organized in the wedding halls of the Turnberry Jewish Center, but this year due to the covid pandemic, the event will take place on the outskirts of the Waterway shopping plaza, overlooking the bay.
For years past (before the pandemic) local families hosted young people who came from other cities, for this year local hotels are offering low prices so that they can participate.
Before dinner, there is an hors d’oeuvres, Kabbalat Shabbat and kiddush service, as well as a series of icebreaker programs that help young people overcome their shyness and get to know each other. After dinner, dessert tables are opened, and it is estimated that between the beginning and the end the 8 to 10 hours of consecutive programs will be met (it starts at 6pm and ends around 4 am).
During Shabbat day, Kspace in Miami is open for morning services (shacharit), and lunch is served outdoors, in the same tents and tables as the night before. At the end of Shabbat, a music festival with musical instruments is organized.
On Saturday night, pizzas, ice cream and soft drinks are served outside Kspace. Sunday between 5 pm and 11 pm on the rooftop of Aventura Chabad a “Sunset Cocktail Party” is held, with live music from one of the best known DJs in Miami, an open bar and a fast-food kiosk are offered.
On Monday, the day after the end of the Gala, a barbecue is offered to all the young people who participated in the weekend so that they can continue socializing, share their experiences and feel closer to the great family of young people, Kspace Miami.
“The largest number of couples which have been formed through our organization is thanks to the Black Tie Shabbat Affair, B ”H!” says Rabbi Yossi Smierc. “With a board that is comprised entirely of young adults, we are able to reach the youth by understanding them. Through our entertaining and meaningful weekly events, we are committed to offering a means that will ignite the spiritual light found within every young Jewish soul.”
Kspace is a center for Jewish learning, friendships and social events. At Kspace we strive to be a second home for the young Jewish community. Located in South Florida, however, we welcome young professionals from all over the world!
