A campaign started by 2 teenaged girls from Pittsburgh to encourage doing good deeds in honor of Lori Kaye, who was murdered in a shooting at the Chabad Center of Poway, is gaining momentum.
Chavi Leeds and Shira Weinstein were devastated by the news of the shooting in Poway, California on the last day of Pesach, and decided they needed to do “something real,” in response, they told COLlive.
“Last week after Passover ended, all our eyes and hearts were with Poway, as we were all inching over each other’s shoulders, frantically scrolling to see the latest updates of our brethren. I sat in my home in Pittsburgh, remembering the all too familiar feeling of being punched in the gut,” Leeds told COLlive.
So she called her friend, and they decided they had to take action.
After some brainstorming, they came up with a plan to encourage doing acts of goodness and kindness.
“We remembered the light and goodness that went rampant in November for Pittsburgh, and we remembered all the good deeds, and we remembered the ‘Moment of Silence,'” Leeds said.
The two contacted Charidy, the crowdfunding platform, who agreed to host the Mitzvah campaign on their site.
Inspired by The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s push for the Moment of Silence in schools, which emphasizes an awareness that there is a Higher power and to be good, and be good to others, the “Pause for Poway” campaign is about doing kindness and goodness for others, to spread the light.
“One person affects his family, his family affects his community, his community affects his country, and his country affects the world,” Leeds said. “You change yourself, you change the world. Start the Chain of Kindness.”
