Members of the Beis Din of Crown Heights Rabbi Yaacov Schwei and Rabbi Yosef Braun issued a letter on Erev Shabbos calling on the public to vaccinate.
The letter comes in response to the reported outbreak of a measles in Crown Heights, causing concern to many residents, visitors and medical professionals.
“In accordance with the known instructions of the Rebbe in Igros Kodesh etc., both in general, that in all matters of medicine one must do according to the instructions of specialist physicians, and regarding immunization in particular, that they are a matter of routine procedure and one should not act different than the community in this regard,” the Rabbis wrote.
“We urge all to act according to the instructions of the majority of expert qualified physicians, who are authorized by the government, as per the ruling of Shulchan Aruch.”
Congregation Lubavitch, a Chabad synagogue that shares a building with Yeshivas Beis Dovid Shlomo on Norton Street in New Haven, Connecticut, is taking a stand to protect the health of its congregants.
The shul has been contacted by the New Haven Health Departement regarding the outbreak of the viral measles infection in New Haven County as well in New York.
“We therefore ask anyone who chooses not to vaccinate themselves or their children not to attend services or any community events until this health crisis has ended,” shul’s president Moti Sandman publicly asked.
On Friday, The Gedaliah Society, a network of Chabad medical professionals in Crown Heights, stated that it was “important for every child, man and woman in this community to make sure they have received two MMR vaccines.”

Regarding measles, are your numbers from the CDC worldwide? Total cases in US? How did that compare to influenza these days, when the CDC claims 80,000 deaths last year? Do you believe that as well? Labs receiving samples in NY this season report around 25% actually flu virus, but maybe they count all flu-like illnesses in their count. Death rate in NY only counts pediatrics, which was 5 so far. In the decade before 1963 when a vaccine became available, nearly all children got measles by the time they were 15 years of age. It is estimated 3 to 4 million people in the United States were infected each year. Also each year, among reported cases, an estimated 400 to 500 people died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and 1,000 suffered encephalitis (swelling of the brain) from measles.

People read them and then have to assess risk/benefit. Right now, we are seeing outbreaks for the first time in years! We MUST err on the side of caution. We are ch’v heading toward widespread epidemics of diseases we have had under control or eliminated entirely! Do these young anti-vaxer moms even know what polio is? I doubt it.

Wow, such well meaning ignorance on the topic. Funny how no doctor yet has agreed to public debate or to prove mercury or aluminum is safe in vaccines. Just last week RFK was alone on a panel when 4 doctors backed out at the last second. Vaccines did not eradicate polio and the others they take claim for- just need to look up mortality statistics from countries like US and England and not zoom in to the year the vaccine was implemented but see the drastic drop trending even before. I’m worried about the chilul Hashem uts making when national newsites are showing that Jewish communities refuse to vaccinate. Wether true or not it’s only a matter of time that the anti semites come out and blame the Jews for this disease as they have done in the past.

Those are all things you’d expect from just about any virus. That’s why if you have any symptoms post-vaccination, you should report them to your physician. Vaccines work and are necessary almost all doctors agree. Vaccines do not cause autism contrary to what you might have seen on face book
It is only a matter of time that most physicians will be divided on the issue of vaccination. Also, really there is not a consensus of a “majority” of doctors. It is really one opinion of one or MAYBE a few doctors in the top organizations and the vast majority of the doctors are just following this recommendation. The majority are not well versed or experts on this subject. It is not their specialty.
A brief analysis of some references in this ruling. The reference to Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim is talking about following the instruction of the doctor when someone is already sick and his life is in danger. This has nothing whatsoever to do with a case of prevention where no one is sick and the pharmaceutical product is claimed to prevent an alleged harm. The analogy is false.
