When a journalist got married in 1989 at the age of 30, she made a point of observing the laws of family purity, immersing in the mikvah each month. But though she prayed fervently for a child, month after month pregnancy tests were negative.
A friend suggested that she write to the Rebbe asking for a blessing. She did but did not get a response.
A short while later, she received a diagnosis of endometriosis, and her doctor suggested she have surgery to correct it. “Everything looks fine now,” the surgeon told her. “The endometriosis likely accounts for your inability to get pregnant.”
But the negative pregnancy tests continued. When she met her friend again, she described her frustration. “Why not just try to contact the Rebbe again?” the friend suggested.
She agreed to try again, and this time the Rebbe responded, urging her to carefully review the laws of family purity.
She didn’t understand. Hadn’t she been observing the laws scrupulously for more than two years?
“I was convinced that I already knew them so well,” she said.
But she called her friend and made time to review some of the laws. To her astonishment, she discovered that she had been going to the mikvah a day early for the past two years.
She immediately corrected her calendar, and the very next month she was overjoyed to find that she was pregnant.
