Fathers Day Effort in Crown Heights

Although father’s day is not usually celebrated in religious communities. This year it is being marked with a special campaign to create the first Crown Heights foster home.

It’s a call you never want to receive.

A child is being taken out of their home by the City. Sometimes it’s just for a few nights until a complaint is investigated, other times it can be weeks or months until a child will return to their parents.

Due to large family sizes, lack of space, training and other resources, no Crown Heights family has been able to answer this call. Except one. For the past five years, Moshe and Hindy have opened their doors, and their hearts, to any child in need of a safe home.

In addition to their three children, the couple is now poised to adopt their three foster care children, siblings, so that they can remain together in a safe, loving environment. “It’s painful for a child to be moved to a home in another community, especially when they are separated from their brothers or sisters,” Hindy explains. “My husband and I have done all we can to ensure these kids can grow up together.”

Since 2013, Moshe and Hindy have also welcomed in both short term and long term fostered children, including teens and infants.

But they can’t do it alone.

This Sunday, in honor of Father’s Day, The Vaad Hakohol of Crown Heights has the incredible opportunity to acquire a home in Crown Heights with enough space to welcome additional children, ensuring that each one gets the support they need to overcome any challenges during this difficult time

“We have a responsibility to the children of our community,” Hindy added. “But even though most families in Crown Heights can’t take in another child, we can all do something. This campaign is just one way we can all come together as a community and make sure these kids are taken care of.”
