Special guests in the terminal.
232 people boarded a special flight chartered by the Nefesh B’Nefesh organization flying from the JFK International Airport in New York and delivering its passengers to the Holy Land as their final destination on Tuesday.
Among them was Hana Lowenstien, the daughter of former US Senator and vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman. She made aliya to Israel with her husband Daniel and their four children who range between the ages of 2 and 7.
Senator Lieberman came to the airport to send off his family. “I’m excited, I’m proud of them – it’s the Jewish future, Jewish destiny,” he told the Jerusalem Post. “We miss them of course, but thank God we have WhatsApp and Facetime and Skype.”
Before the flight, Lieberman and his family paid a visit to Chabad of the Airport stand where he watched a video of himself, his wife, and then-baby daughter receiving dollars and a blessing from the Rebbe before traveling to Washington, DC.
That visit in 1989 to Lubavitch World Headquarters – 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn took place before his swearing-in to the US Senate, launching a long and respected career during which he served his country and defended his Jewish community and Israel.
Lieberman was very moved by the video and stayed a while afterward recounting other experiences of his with the Rebbe which have provided him with guidance throughout his career, and expressing his great admiration for Chabad activities at the airport and around the globe.
“I’m very grateful that we live in a time — for the first time in two millennia — that there is a Jewish State of Israel that Jews around the world can go to by choice and not just because they need a sanctuary,” he told the Post. “It’s a great time for Israel inside, and for US-Israel relations outside.”
The new olim hail from across the US, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, as well as from the Canadian province of Quebec, the Post reported.
The group of olim ranged from 6-months-old to 80-years-old and included 34 families, 18 singles, three sets of twins, six future IDF soldiers and 15 medical professionals. 62 of the olim will be moving to Israel’s periphery, 35 of those to the south, Jerusalem Post reported.
