A family living in the Ezras Torah neighborhood of Jerusalem’s 6-year-old son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy three years ago. Since then, their lives have been a painful whirlwind of hospital visits and mounting debt. The boy’s treatments must be administered daily, and are extremely expensive.
Drained of what little money they had, this anonymous family is now unable to pay their rent. They are also lacking food for their home kitchen, clothing for the rest of their children, and other basic needs.
They are aware of the success that some have had by way of fundraising campaigns on Jewish sites such as The Chesed Fund. However, they were faced with a moral dilemma.
Fearful that making their story public would have a negative impact on their future, they suffered in silence. They needed to make a choice: Suffer in silence, or appeal to the public and risk humiliation.
When the father’s Rebbi in yeshiva, Rabbi Yechiel Shlessinger, was made aware of their dilemma, he happily volunteered to be their representative. Rabbi Shlessinger released a video on Wednesday, where he explained the family’s dire circumstances. Their hope is that, with the Rabbi’s stamp of approval, viewers will be moved to donate.
Unfortunately, many of the family’s fears were confirmed. Though they succeeded in concealing their identities, the campaign has failed to come near to its goal. Most who have visited the fundraising page have remained indifferent. While readers scroll past, a six-year-old and his family’s very real future hangs in the balance.
