Erev Tisha B’Av, the ‘H Family’ were sleeping soundly in their home in the Geulah neighborhood of Jerusalem. By the time they noticed the smell of smoke, their apartment was already half engulfed by flames. The eldest children quickly rushed to the father of the family, who is wheelchair-bound. They pulled him from the flames, and miraculously, the entire family survived.
As they stood on the street in their pajamas, watching their home smolder, they quickly realized just how much had been left behind. Every belonging the H family had in this world lay in ashes. With son Nattan getting married next week, the family had already purchased everything necessary for the wedding: gowns, the groom’s suit, and shtreimel. Everything was gone.
The next morning, hours before the fast, the H boys were seen going from clothing store to clothing store, knocking on locked doors. Everything was closed. However the H family had no clothing other than what they wore on their backs. One store mercifully opened and allowed them to purchase enough clothing to last them until after the fast.
Such has been their lives following the devastation. Their large family has been forced to live in their grandfather’s apartment, without proper living space for the children. Rebbetzin H has been unable to work, as she scrambles to supervised her traumatized children, and to pull together some semblance of a wedding.
Nattan has had to face the reality that he has nothing to offer his kallah. His time has nearly run out.
