Three haredi extremists were arrested after barging into the home of Kiryat Gat’s Chief Rabbi Moshe Havlin on Wednesday night, resulting in the hospitalization of the rabbi’s wife.
According to reports, the group of 20 men are believed to be affiliated with the radical haredi anti-Zionist Neturei Karta movement from the Jerusalem area.
They traveled south to protest against Rabbi Havlin, a member of the Chabad Rabbinical Court of Israel and Rosh Yeshivas Chabad in Kiryat Gat, for his support of a recently negotiated agreement between Chabad yeshivas and the Israel Defence Forces.
As part of the arrangement, 85% of Chabad’s Yeshiva students will be drafted, while 15% will receive exemptions to study abroad and serve as assistants at Chabad centers worldwide.
Those not receiving exemptions will also receive a two-year deferral to allow them to study at the ‘Kevutzah’ program at Chabad’s central Tomchei Tmimim Yeshiva at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York.
Haredi draft opponents blasted the arrangement, and on Wednesday night a group of anti-Zionist demonstrators confronted Rabbi Havlin at his home in Kiryat Gat.
According to witnesses, a dozen or so draft law opponents broke into the Havlin family home and began shouting loudly, cursing the rabbi, and breaking furniture.
Rabbi Havlin and his wife Chaya Havlin attempted to chase the attackers out, but were unable to do so. Mrs. Havlin ultimately suffered a medical episode as a result of the incident, and was hospitalized.
“I opened the door because I thought someone needed something from me – many people come to my home,” Rabbi Havlin told Ynet news. “I opened the door and the barge in, pushed me. My wife fainted. They started screaming and blowing a shofar, rips pictures from the walls, cursed and attacked me.”
Police arrested three of the demonstrators and are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Because outside the shchuna everybody’s just breaking into houses and scaring old ladies into the hospital and it’s totally OK because no one knows any better and there’s no such thing as empathy or civilized society or the law… We’re all shaped by one culture or another, some more toxic than others, and we all have our good, bad, and rotten apples, but there has to be a way to disassociate from this sort of behavior without presenting a different warped view of humanity/massive chillul Hashem.
Maybe Neturei Karta aren’t what we as the Rebbe’s Chassidim look up to, but a Yid is a Yid no matter who he/she is and we have no right to talk about them like that.
