A man was unharmed after a violent crash caused by texting and driving on Saturday, January 4, just after 1:00 a.m. in Fort Myers, Florida.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Michael James Woody, admitted he was texting and took his eyes off the roadway, according to police.
Officer Ivan Moorer was traveling southbound on Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard, approaching Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, when he noticed unusual driving behavior of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am directly in front of his patrol vehicle. The driver was swerving and slowing for no apparent reason.
The vehicle traveled westbound onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and abruptly accelerated across the inside lane of westbound travel, drove up onto the sidewalk and violently struck a guardrail, bus stop sign and tree before rolling over. Woody was able to climb out of the overturned vehicle and crawl to safety.
Woody was cited for careless driving and texting while driving.
“Texting and driving is a serious epidemic. We hope the in-car video in this incident is a wake-up call to those that text and drive,” said police spokesman Lieutenant Victor Medico.
VIDEO: Filmed from the patrol car’s dashboard camera
He should have gotten a red light violation as well.
Why does the police not stop???
why does he continue texting after he flips over
i usually dont like gettin involved in the fights that occur here everyday but number 17 dont make a joke ot of htis. its not funny at all. he could have died. and if you are posting wile driving keep it to urself no one wants to hear ur dumb comments after seeing somehting lke that.
and why didnt the police stop him right away?????????
tat comment is making me sick. lets see u say that if the guy in the video was chvs”m you!
hello help call 911 dont gast stand ther do somtheeng
Just a possibility, if the cop didn’t know any first aid he would be more helpful sitting in his car radio-ing for help than out there watching.
You should not text and drive, I see so many people in Crown Heights texting and driving
what a joke.
I’m writing this comment as I drive.
i did it was awesome!!!!!!!!!
to 10 u don’t know that maybe he really was texting the cop himself must be falling asleep because he didn’t get out and help.
The Police dosnt pull them over the first time the car
Started to swerve???!!!!
have a nice day everybody. xxxx 🙂 behatzlacha
A.Why didn’t the cop pull him over once he saw the guy couldn’t steer? The guy could have been hurt! What’s the cop doing? This whole accident could have been avoided. Thank G-d no one else was on the road.
B. This guy should not even have a license. I know many people who think that using their phone while operating a vehicle is fine as long as you know you’re driving. It’s not. There should be harsher laws against cell phone use.
No officer would sit idle while that happened.
he was falling asleep
he was swerving and should have been pulled over! Why wait? What if the cop’s mother was waiting at the bus stop? Stupid, stupid cops.
He should have been pulled over before he turned, he was obviously not driving properly, if not that, where were police in assisting him getting out of the car????
so scary
Please share this; people need to See this.
Maybe the cop was waiting for probable cause to pull him over? If he pulls hi, over too soon, you’d also complain. Moral of story: STOP FREAKIN TEXTING WHEN YOU DRIVE! If you wanna kill yourself, jump. Don’t put others at risk
that if someone is in trouble, go help them out! just stand by and watch so that you could say how bad it is?!?! Is that what the cops get paid for?? he couldn’t have the decency to get out and help him?? Also, why didn’t he stop him earlier before that happened if he knows how dangerous texting is?? Let him learn from a ticket not from a crash!!
Where are they when you need them?
Now, it is all about videotaping, who has the best video.
I guess they will start give them awards for
” A Job Well Done”
What a shame this could had been prevented.
So scary!!!!!
