Rabbi Yaakov Dov Katz, Rosh Yeshiva of the largest Chabad Yeshiva in Israel, the Central Tomchei Temimim of Kfar Chabad, has passed away on Motzei Shabbos, Cheshvan 22, 5775.
He was 83.
Rabbi Katz educated and influenced thousands of students during the over 47 years that he served as mashgiach and later as Rosh Yeshiva of Tomchei Temimim, which produced Chassidim, Rabbis, Shluchim and community leaders living around the world.
A resident of the charedi city of Bnei Brak, Rabbi Katz was the Rov of the old Chabad shul on Avraham Street for many years.
The Levaya will take place on Sunday, leaving from his home at 10 Yonah Hanavi Street in Bnei Brak. Thousands of anash and his former students are expected to attend.
He is survived by his wife, Esther, and children: Rabbi Shmuel Katz – Chicago; Chana Mishkin – Bnei Brak, Israel; Batsheva Deren – Pittsburgh, PA; and Devorah Pruss – Kfar Chabad, Israel.

he was a very special man and did lots of mitzvos…may hashem bring moshiach now.
Though he was not my biological uncle, I did marry into the family, and he welcomed me as he would a biological nephew. He was a very special Jew in every right. He was brilliant, well thought out, kind-hearted and an all-around gem of a Jew. Though I lived all my life 6000 miles away from him, every couple years when I made it to Israel I made a point of visiting him either in Bnei Brak or Kfar Chabad. We would discuss many issues and philosophies. He was extremely insightful and enjoyable to sit and farbreng with. I’ll miss… Read more »

omg what a loss! ad mosai
For two years back in the Lamed’s, I had the privilege of learning in Kfar Chabad where Reb Yankel was always at his post. His shtender was the station from where he stood and fielded all the dozens of questions daily. His passion, patience, charisma, wisdom made its imprint upon all of the bochurim in Yeshiva. What a sore loss for Klal Yisroel. Boruch Dayan HaEmes.
