This past Sunday was the first-ever Career Event in Crown Heights, and it was a huge success, with over seventy people in attendance, including ladies coming from Queens, Far Rockaway and Williamsburg.
The audience was busy taking notes on the information they learned and jotting down questions for the open-forum time after the speakers finished. Some people got clarification about professions they knew about, others were exposed to careers they didn’t even know existed.
The day started with the event coordinator, Rivka Teich, introducing Yossi Ginzberg, a liaison with the Crown Heights Community Council. Rabbi Ginzberg gave valuable information about scholarships available and had a diagram explaining the importance of job security when you possess specific skills in a career, as opposed to just having a job.
The audience heard from Shaina Minkoff, a nurse; Yiska Gedal, a Doula/massage therapist/acupuncturist; Dinie Uminer and Fruma Wilchansky, life coaches; Tracy Akner, a veterinarian; Rivka Teich herself, a court reporter; Tali Cheses, an architect; Sheina Levin, a real estate agent; Aviva Friedman, a chef; Sara Perez, an interpreter; and Miriam Rochester, an interior designer.
The speakers spoke passionately about their professions. They explained the schooling involved and gave live demonstrations of what they do. They told entertaining and funny anecdotes, while describing their day to day activities.
“The positive response was overwhelming,” said Rivka Teich. “People came up to me one after the other saying there is a need for more such events. Everyone can learn something here. And the biggest question I got was, ‘When is the next one?'”
The topic of a Career Event geared towards men was also brought up by many attendees.
