Israel’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar has been on a private visit in Crown Heights Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
He came to participate in the wedding of Zalman Torenheim from Trumbull, Connecticut and Mushy Zajac of Crown Heights which took place at the Razag Ballroom.
The kallah’s grandfather is Rabbi Leibel Zajac (pronounced Zaientz), a resident of S. Paulo in Brazil who is active in the area of conversions to Judaism (girus). He has collaborated with Rabbi Amar and is a close friend of his.
At the wedding, many guests warmly greeted Rabbi Amar, a respected halachic authority who graduated Chabad’s yeshiva network in Morocco. An entertaining scene was when the colorful figure known as Charlie Buttons asked him for a blessing.
This morning, Rabbi Amar came to Lubavitch Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, accompanied by Rabbi Zajac and Rabbi Moshe Klein, owner of Hasofer ‘stam’ services.
The Rebbe’s holy room in 770 was opened especially for him by Rabbi Sholom Ber Gansburg. Following his prayer, Rabbi Amar commented, “here is where all the children of Israel pray. Here is where everyone cries” for help.
