Reb Elazar Piller, a long time resident of the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, passed away on Sunday, 21 Adar 5773.
He was 94.
A Radomske chossid, he was one of the few non Lubavitch frum Jews who remained living on Eastern Parkway after many fled to other areas in Brooklyn.
He originally davened in the Belzer Shtiebel. When that closed, he began attending the Karastira shul and when that closed as well, he went to the Sosnowitz shul.
In his later years he davened on Shabbos in the main shul of 770 Eastern Parkway.
He is survived by 2 sons and a daughter who live in Flatbush.
The levaya will be held Monday at 9:15am at
Shomrei Hachomos 4218 Fort Hamilton Parkway Brooklyn, NY 11219.

NEIGHBORS WOULD CHASE ME WITH THEIR DOGS AND
PHYSICALLY BEAT UP JEWISH BOYS AND GIRLS. MOST OF THE STORES ON KINGSTON AVENUE WERE
DESERTED AND BOARDED UP. IT WAS VERY SCARY

Just to set the record straight and correct the information – Reb Elazar Pillar z”l davened in the Skverer Shul, and was the baal koreh there, until the Shul closed. You can also write in the article that he was a big talmid chochom.
What are you getting so worked up about? Crown Heights in the ’60s and ’70s – when pretty much everyone but Lubavitch left the neighborhood – was like a war zone.
I thought him & his brother Shmeik z”l where originally bobover chasidim as they used to davening in hobos on Brooklyn ave as well ( many years ago)
People were selling their homes for below value and yes it was turning into a war zone Troy and Lincoln which was full of yiddishe home an stores changed overnight. Books can and have been written . There’s a trove of letters and sichos in chelek vov of lekutey sichos to give an insight of how things were. What the pillars did among a few others was unbelievable and was much admired.
I remember the kibud Av his children and grandchildren had to bring him to shul to daven.

His daughter Mrs. Besser(Piller) was my best third grade teacher @ Bnos Yisroel School in Flatbush. I used many of her teaching methods in my own third grade classroom @ Bais Rivkah. Very fine people!

A halige yid with a lot of ahavas yisroel. Used to see him everyday in 770 waiting to daven shacharis with the netz minyan.
After many fled to other areas of Brooklyn? Fled? Really? It was like a war zone or something of that nature? The neighborhood was changing, so they moved out. Simple as that. Fled? Really? Wow.
