New York City Councilman David Greenfield is encouraging homeowners who are struggling to stay in their homes to take advantage of a unique opportunity to receive mortgage assistance.
The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program, offered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will provide eligible homeowners with assistance that will pay a portion of their mortgages for up to two years or $50,000.
“I cannot think of something more important than keeping families in their homes,” said Councilman Greenfield.
“Foreclosures hurt the entire community and further destabilize already cash-strapped households. We were all impacted by this recession and there is a long road to a complete economic recovery ahead of us. I am encouraged by this much-needed aid from our federal government and I hope homeowners in need will apply immediately for assistance.”
In order to be eligible for the program, homeowners must be at least 90 days late on their mortgage and unemployed, or working fewer hours, because of the economy or a medical condition.
This program will only remain open until July 22, 2011.
Greenfield is working with Brooklyn Housing and Family Services, located at 415 Albemarle Road in Brooklyn, to provide information and pre-applications.
Interested homeowners can contact Brooklyn Housing and Family Services directly at 718-435-7585 or call Councilman Greenfield’s office at 718-853-2704 for further instructions.

You are wrong about what you said,….. You have no clue what is going on inside other peoples homes… I know a family that parents are divorced and if they dont find a way to pay their mortgage they are going to loose it…. No working is not a good thing trust me if these people are able to work they would. You should not Jude these people until your G-D forbid in their shoes…. This is really not a joke i guess you dont know what is really going on in real life and how much people are really… Read more »
hmmmm, i’m not begrudging anyone who could benefit from this program, but there doesn’t seem to be any point in working when all the programs that are available are for people not working or living off the dole and there are no programs to help with mortgage payments or anything else for those of us working people who “earn too much”. Just saying.
