Winds are continuing to blow through the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn from the superstorm Sandy, leaving trees and even streetpoles blocking some streets.
Still, the damage here is not as harsh as other parts of New York and the East Coast where the hurricane-turned-tropical storm hit and left many without electricity and public transit.
The roof of the Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim dormitory at 1414 President Street was chipped over the night and bochurim were evacuated from the top floors of the building to the basement, where the Getzel’s Shul is located.
In many apartment buildings and private homes, minyanim for Mincha and Maariv were being held in the lobby or dining-room, saving the men the hassle or even danger from walking to a nearby shul.
A representative for Hatzalah Crown Heights, a volunteer medical response organization, told COLlive.com there have been no storm-related injuries or calls. “Our volume of emergency calls has not gone up,” he said.
Residents are warned to stay out of harm’s way and keep away from electric poles and cut wires.
Girls schools Bais Rivka on Lefferts Avenue and Crown Street, and Bnos Menachem on E New York Avenue remain closed and will resume learning on Wednesday, COLlive was told.
The boys schools, on the other hand, are back in full vigor – that includes United Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street and Oholei Torah on Eastern Parkway.
“The winds that are causing trees to fall are milder now and remaining milder,” said Rabbi Yosef Simpson, Principal of Lubavitcher Yeshiva, who said there was 70% attendance when they reopened on Tuesday morning.
“When it comes to yeshiva, you don’t need an excuse why not to stop learning. You need an excuse why yes,” he said.

From the pictures it is very clear that the fallen trees are sick trees. They should have been cut before. Powercuts are a shame in 2012. Every modern western country has his electricity cables burried 6 feet below. If the streets are full of water because the seelevel rises with 15 feet, than your infrastructure is a joke. Winds of 80mph should not cause a major problem for a well build modern country. yes, when a tree falls on your car it is a big loss
the storm might have been no big deal to the families who werent affected by the storm. when a tree falls on your car or your family loses power it is a different story.
