Over 500 people gathered this week to celebrate Chanukah on Orchard Road in the central commercial district with the first ever a public Menorah lighting in Singapore.
The Menorah stands at 7.5 meters tall and will remain on Orchard Road throughout the holiday.
The event brought much pride to the community as a whole. After the lighting, parents, children, grandchildren and friends of the Jewish community feasted on traditional oil-fried Chanukah fare including doughnuts and other delicacies while enjoying lively music performed by a band led by the bochurim Shluchim who are learning in Singapore this year.
The two Shluchim, Rabbi Mordechai Abergel, Chief Rabbi of Singapore and Rabbi Netanel Rivni were joined by the US Ambassador, Israeli consul and other dignitaries for the holiday celebration.
Thio Gim Hock, CEO of OUE/LIPPO group on whose property the menorah stands, addressed the crowd, thanking the Singapore government for fostering a safe, multicultural and multi-religious society which provides freedom of religion to all.
