Rule #47 for aspiring thieves: Don’t leave clues.
Three black teens attempted to snatch the mobile phone of a Jewish resident of Crown Heights while he was sitting in his car on Union Street between Kingston and Albany at 9:15 am on Thursday.
As one of them reached into his window for the device, the Lubavitcher fought off the would-be muggers and called the Police.
The NYPD community affairs unit responded to the call, and drove with the victim around the vicinity, to see if they could find the perpetrators.
Upon hearing that the teens wore backpacks, the cops suspected they were on their way to school.
The nearest high school is the George Wingate High School down Kingston Avenue, between Rutland and Winthrop, where the police asked the school administrators for the names of students who had arrived late this morning.
When the photos were shown to the victim, he positively identified the mugger from the latecomers and by 10:30 am the cops arrested the mugger.
A source in the NYPD 71st Precinct told COLlive they will be calling in previous victims to look at pictures to see if he was involved in any other recent muggings.
“It would seem as of now that these are opportunist criminals, not related to each other,” the source said, reminding residents to be aware of surroundings when talking on the phone.
