This past Yud-Tes Kislev, Rabbis Eli Feiner and Mendel Zaklikofsky traveled to the Hawaiian Island of Lana’i to print an edition of the Tanya.
Under the directorship of the Shluchim of Maui, Rabbi Sholom and Danit Schusterman, they set out by ferry boat from Lahaina harbor on the Maui to Lana’i.
Lana’i has a population of 2800 people year round. Numerous phone calls needed to be made to various small centers on the Island such as the Lana’i Public library where a woman named Jessica was able to refer the Rabbis to the only copy machine available on the island to be able to complete the job.
It was “The Coalition for a Drug Free Lana’i ” that had a one year old copy machine which was updated and advanced enough to be able to complete the job.
A woman by the name of Jerrel, the executive director of the center, stayed with them from 5 pm until 1 am, when all the Tanyas were finally completed.
Under the Rebbe’s direction, in order to print a Tanya in a new place, there needs to be at least one Jew living there and the quantity of Tanyas printed should be at least one hundred.
Before the Rabbis set out to do this project they got in touch with one Jew by the name of Robin Kaye that has lived on the Island for many years. He said he would like to be present when the Tanyas are being printed but his schedule did not allow it.
The printing was complete by 1am Friday morning and Rabbis Feiner and Zaklikovsky then stayed on for Shabbos where they met a few other Jews on the Island.
The Tanyas are on their way to New York where they will be covered and bound. The project was sponsored by Chabad of Maui.
