The details are sketchy, but the crack is certain.
As davening neared conclusion on the second day of Rosh Hashana at the main shul of 770 Eastern Parkway, a deep crack was noticed in the Shofar that was used for the Tekios.
The shofar, purchased by the Rebbe and one of the 6 that are kept in a safe in the offices of Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch, was said to be in a fine state just hours earlier.
Blowing the shofar for the thousands of residents and guests gathered in the large shul was R’ Sholom Tenenbaum, temporarily replacing his brother R’ Levi Tenenbaum, a son-in-law of the Rebbe’s Mazkir Rabbi Leibel Groner, due to illness.
“The crack was on a seam,” Levi Tenenbaum told COLlive.com, still sounding under the weather. “I haven’t seen a crack like this one – I don’t think it can even be fixed.”
He explained that there is a way to fill cracks in a shofar, as discussed at length in halacha. Tenenbaum said that while there was no way to know for certain, “I think the Rebbe used this shofar.”
Trying to figure out how to deal with the situation after the discovery, the gabboim of 770 decided to hold a second round of shofar sounding just after davening concluded, with the blessings said by a bochur who had not yet heard the shofar that day.
For some reason, the strong-voiced gabbai R’ Menachem Gerlitzky did not make the announcement, leaving it to his colleague R’ Zalman Lipskier.
Many who rushed out to the Rosh Hashana meal, or who simply didn’t hear Lipskier’s statement left 770 without hearing that there was even a question to their hearing of the shofar which is the main ‘commandment of the day.’
But Tenenbaum said the extra blowing was not specially needed, as the custom of Chabad is to blow an additional 30 sounds after davening and Tehillim anyways.
“Whoever heard that is yotze,” he said. “And either way, the shofar was found possul after the original tekios, not before or during.”

Dear Brothers Have Rachmanos on all klal yisrael. The Rebbe spoke about Ahavas Yisroel! if you watch Rabbi Butman’s motzai Shabbos video you will see how important it was to make shalom between 2 ministers who had a dispute that no one knew about. Unfortunately it’s a fact 770 has been relegated to just one of the sixty shuld there are in CH ( & not the largest of local CH baalebatim). There were about 400 Taleisim in 770 on RH. when you take into account some of these were Israelis that doesn’t leave a very respectable number. Anyone can challenge these figures but if we say that the average minyan had 50 that accounts for 3,000 outside of 770. Ohel Nosson had 500 people. attention, there is a rotation; each Rov gets a kibud. Sometimes it’s this kibud, sometimes it’s another. There are 3 Rabbonim, so it comes up random.
Yes, for some time Rabbi Osdobo Shlito was the only member of the beis din, so he got the kibudim more often, but when a 2nd and then 3rd Rov were elected, the kibudim are divided EQUALY.
PLEASE don’t create new Machlokes Ch”v from thin air.

The announcement was made in the BEGINNING of Chazaras HaShat”z of Musas. A very short time after the original Tekios.
They did not blow an extra set of Tekios. The Last 30 tekeios which we blow after Tehilim was the time when the Bochur made a brocho. Whoever remained for the full davening heard all the Tekios.
I was all the way in the back of the shull and knew of the problem a minute after R’ Lipsker announced it.

i dont think there was a crack in the rebbes shofar years before! i think #& is right the whole machlokis in 770 is a complete disrespect of rabbonim and crown heightsers must over think what is happening and do some real tishuva before yom kippur
shofars don’t last forever. Also, there may have been a crack for years and because there was another baal tokeah he noticed it. until the crack was discovered,even if someone heard tekios 1 minute before, he is still yotze. i bought a shofar this year and only noticed a crack when I came home. That obviously doesn’t mean there is something wrong with the store that sold it.
I doven in the Kingston Shul – we heard a man’s voice but could not hear what he actually said – the women all questioned what was going on, but no one in my section heard any specifics, only that “someone said something about the shofar” – many women must leave before the end of dovening to prepare the meal so they didn’t hear the extrs tekiyos – I certainly hope that we were all still yotzoi with shofar …
in your defense of osdoba you say levi tennenbaum became ill and we didnt have the regular baal tokea. the regualr ball tokea is the Rebbe and no one else and we are not boro park or flatbush we dont need rabbonim we need the Rebbe
Why is it the senior Rov chosen by the Rebbe was not given his usual maftir Rosh Hashana for which he has a chazaka for many years , think about this – just after the one who stole the Maftir from Hrav Osdoba , the Shofar became posul . To Number 7: Before you accuse The Gaboim of banning a Rav please bring proof!!!! Especially taking into consideration that 3 out of 4 Gaboim are on his side!!
What was the bochur who said the brochos so busy with that he still hadn’t heard shofar at 2 in the afternoon??

i was there and everyone heard Zalman Lipsker’s announcement to stay till the end of the last tikiyus. It was right before nsane tokef when your not aloud to speak, the gabai gets up and starts speaking, You can imagine the shul became silent in a second. Also, they did not blow extra tikyus rather the last tikiyus that they blew anyways (after tehillim) was done with a bracha. 5746 there was a psul in sefer torah in 770 the rebbe said it is because of the lack of kavod harrabonim. 5772 the rebbes rov (who was elected 5746) was not in 770 rosh hashana for “some reason”….
The announcement was made before unesane tokef, not at the end of davening. The whole shul was quiet and everyone heard. The announcement was that everyone should be sure to stay in shul to hear the customary 30 blasts at the end, just in case the first 30 were not good. Almost everyone stayed. The baal tokeiah made a bracha for one person who had not yet heard shofar, again just in case.
The rebbe did not want his shofar to be blown in a shul where a Rov was banned from having his seat in 770
The Rebbe didn’t want the people who are fighting him and his Rav to use his Shofar. Absolute miracle!

During Musaf Shmoneh Esray, there was another shofar being blown a few minutes after the main one. I think most people heard that one too… Shul was quiet and it was impossible not to hear it.
send all the isrealis home. if they can pull a knife out on 1 of the balabatim then they can damage the rebbes shofar
