Dix Hills Recovers from Sandy

On a quiet day like any other in the small town of Dix Hills, an unknown visitor came knocking. No one was sure of who she was or what she can do. So the townspeople did their very best to prepare and be as hospitable as they possibly can.

When Ms. Hurricane Sandy arrived on the threshold of our homes, she blew us away. Anyone that came into her presence found themselves in the grasps and wrath of her unseen events, ravishingly bringing the wisps of winter upon us. The townspeople grouped together in the local shteibal (The Chai Center) to discuss the urgent matter at hand.

Each one yelled out, “what about our homes?”

“With no firewood, how am I to keep my family warm?”

“If I can’t find food for my horses, I can’t go anywhere.”

With that, the elderly of the group stood up and said with a booming voice, “We will not sit back and watch as Ms. Sandy tears apart our town and our homes.” “We will lash back with even more strength and give over the message that we can’t be stopped!”

The Chai Center and its community didn’t miss a beat with Hurricane Sandy in their midst. Rabbi Yackov and Zoey Saacks and Rabbi Avraham and Deena Lehr, together with a number of amazing individuals fought back.

The Chai Center in Dix Hills worked along with many volunteers to send cooked Shabbos meals and delivering military meals donated from Merkos to families in the community, They also connected families without any power in their homes to host families who were happy to open all doors to their neighbors. The Chai Center also made Camp Sandy for two days for kids whose families were suffering the after affects of the hurricane.

The Chai Center would like convey their warmest thanks to the following Crown Heights businesses who stepped up and donated to help the Dix Hills community- Gombos Bakery, Nosh World, Sterling Electronics, Benzion Turk Catering, Dovid Malka, Albany Bakery on Kingston and Mendy’s Deli.

In hard and dark times like these, a bright light shines forth. The Chai Center of Dix Hills and its community stands together radiant and aglow.
